Whitman Teacher and Crew Coach Arrested

Honestly, three years in prison, amongst far more frightening predators, is really going to teach him a lesson.

Yeah three years in prison plus a lifetime as a registered sex offender (no future jobs with kids or really any responsible job at all) is no joke. People just want to see the villain of the month tortured to death on live TV and nothing short of that satisfies them

Let’s be real - he’s not going to do 3 years. Maybe he’ll do 1.5 years. When he gets out, he may be able to teach again because employers don’t always check references. So may be he doesn’t teach in a public school system, but he teaches at a private Christian school in Alabama, where they think nothing of older men dating young women (so not a big deal that you can even run for Senate with that kind of background - Hello Roy Moore). Many will say that one girl was 18 and it was co sensual so it wasn’t a crime. Some will say the other girl was 17 and so what he did wasn’t a crime in their state, etc. Or maybe he will teach in an international school.

I’m not saying that what happened to these girls wasn’t a crime - it was. But, as a country, we don’t have laws to prevent it adequately in all states, let alone have a community attitude that supports women when they speak up and investigates and prosecutes (Hello MD - where we argued for some legislation to criminalize coach-student relations and it was held up in committee with an anonymous hold).

If you think three years in prison plus lifetime sex offender status is akin to being tortured to death, you are part of the problem - the problem that slaps these predators on the wrist, if at all, and then only after extreme persistence on the part of reporting women.

Hopefully that is changing.

The rape victims will suffer their whole lives.

3 years is pathetically low.

Men like you think rape is no big deal do 3 sounds like a lit, but it’s not.

If the victims were boys there would be a longer sentence.

The only reason he is serving time is that he committed a crime in his DC townhouse. Thank you to the DC police department and prosecutors for getting this predator out of MCPS and in jail.

Didn’t he realize he would be caught eventually? He already had two warnings.
He made 101K as a teacher and was paid an additional 35k to coach rowing. He supposedly loved teaching and coaching - sounds like this was his dream job.
Why not just stop at flirting? Why not go on Tinder for sex? I’m not condoning anything he did. Just trying to understand the psychology behind his actions.

How can you not realize you need help when you text a teenage female student 4000 times?

Why?
POWER

Exactly. Power.

Also, he's apparently sexually attracted to teenage girls, and this job offered him a steady supply of those. That's why it was his dream job.

+1 Rape isn't about sex; its about power.

This makes sense. He could have easily gone on Tinder and found sex dates. Seems like he was charismatic.
But I’m sure it was his power over these young girls that he was addicted to. Very unfortunate situation.

Even at 16, my friends and I knew he was too comfortable around his students and his presence was unlike any other staff member at WWHS. People ignored what was directly in front of them; too much paperwork for admin, staff members not wanting to make assumptions about colleagues by throwing them under the bus, and parents being so blind by grades that of course this happened. None of it is surprising since most of this community lives in a bubble. Guarantee he wasn’t the only staff member who took advantage of students. It was a different era back then and staff got away with a lot…thank god things will finally change.

I second what this person said. I too had him for AP Euro in 2003-04 and looking back can’t say I am too surprised. Back then he was 30 and living on P or Q street. Crew kids commented on how they would go over to his house and how he gave rides to rowers. He seemed overly comfortable with some girls even then.

I wonder which other staff members this person is referring to here? I have an idea but obviously can’t say.

Regardless three years is a joke but it is better than nothing.

I went to another W school (slightly before this timeframe) and there was a teacher just like this. He had a couple of female students always hanging around him and he gave them rides all over the area. I even remember seeing them out at the mall together. We all new it didn't look right at the time but didn't fully understand just how screwed up this was back then.

I’m a teacher and this is just horrible to read.

I know parents who have reported this kind of behavior, and the teacher continued teaching. Is still at the same school, in fact. Unclear if the principal even cautioned the guy to spend less time outside of school hanging out with young teen girls.

MCPS does nothing unless the police make an arrest. MCPS also is terribly ignorant about same sex grooming. A male teacher with a female student will get more attention than a male teacher grooming a male student. Both are horrible and MCPS should create boundaries that allows for a teacher who exhibits predatory behavior to be fired.
