Ivies vs. Top 20 schools (after listening to many a podcast on the subject)

The last time UVA ranked in top 20 was in 2001. From 1983 to 2007, UVA's rankings:

1983, 1985, 1988 - 2007

But once upon a time, UVA was in the top 20, several times.

I agree with this. People think there is some "magic formula" to get into certain schools. Other than top of the top scores and GPAS, you really just have to fit into what they are looking for, that particular year. There is no one answer.

I know some kids who are superstars, with zero input by the parents.

I also know some kids who are average, possibly below average, but their parents have big money by fluke (mostly by way of timing), and basically bribes their way into college with $1m+ donation/s, under the guise of "athlete". So, you have no way of knowing who is who unless you know that family, directly.

Development office admits and athletic recruits are 100% separate. This is why the "Aunt Becky" scandal was a scandal.
