It is hard to imagine it being "illegal" to spank a 17 or 18 year old but not illegal to spank someone younger.

No need to make it illegal to spank 17 year old boys. When I got to that age, if my mom hit me I'd just laugh at her, or pick her up and say "hey, you're pretty funny!" She stopped when I was younger than that. I think I was taller than her already in 7th grade.

As for my dad hitting me at 17, he didn't do that but if he had I would have socked him back. Game on, mofo.

What I really don't get is how the PP's mom was unable to spank but was somehow able to wash the PP's mouth out with soap. The latter seems like it would be a lot easier to resist if the PP was able to physically overpower mom.

I may be wrong, but I believe spanking is legal until age 12. Illegal under 2 (?) and over 12.

Dude, that is not spanking. What you are describing is assault. A lot of what you all are describing is assault. Spanking was for egregious breaking of rules that was made clear to the child and was at the level of their understanding. It was on the bottom and not face or back of legs.

What I remember is the criticism and verbal/emotional abuse. So much worse than being hit.
A lot of parents wouldn't spank their kids but would tear stripe off of them verbally by criticizing and being generally awful. Those people should not be congratulating themselves. I think kids do forgive spanking because we think that someone lost their cool, or didn't know better. Verbal and emotional abuse is not so easy to let go of.

62 and yes, likely until I was about 8 but it was infrequent and pretty normal in my world. I don’t recall ever spanking my kids....even when they deserved it.

My mother slapped me across the face a few times, including when I was a teen. She also mentally and verbally abused me, calling me all kinds of names. If she had only just spanked me with an open hand on the bottom, I think it would not have phased me. But the slap across the face, and other stuff that I recall, and the verbal abuse have stayed with me.
