36, no.
I was younger than my siblings by 5 years and my parents were too tired to parent me. They did spank my siblings though. |
| 40, yes, I’m not sure how many times. I cannot for the life of me remember why I was spanked, but I vividly remember it happening. And I remember my mom pointing out that her mom (my grandma) shanked with a hairbrush, so at least it wasn’t that bad. |
Ha, spanked. Shanked would have been a very different childhood. |
|
Did I ever get threatened with spanking? YES.
Was I ever spanked? NO. Because I was a good child. My sister was though. 33. |
|
59, yes.
I never spanked my children. |
| 49. Yes. |
| No! Although I was slapped...twice! |
| 36, yes. Not a lot. More the threat. Spanked by both parents. Mom in rage and dad more controlled. Only one time stands out as especially traumatic. Never spanked my kids. Their abusive dad spanked them a few times. It was traumatic for them. He is out of the picture now. |
| 32, yes. I remember a few times. |
| Why do you ask? |
|
47, was spanked, sometimes with objects (slipper, ruler, paddle). I think I spanked my older child twice and decided it was not my parenting style.
From my vantage as a teacher: There’s still a lot of spanking occurring. Across all SES and ethnic groups. People who spank just do it privately if they worry about being judged or reported. |
| 38 and yes. Eastern European. Probably a handful of times and for very specific offenses which I knew about ahead of time. Going near the well. Going near the stove/fire. Running into the road. Running off property. |
| 33, yes. I was spanked by my dad all the way till I left for college. My mom had to find other alternatives like washing my mouth with soap though because I could physically overpower her by then. |
| 31, Canadian. Never spanked — sent to my room as my most extreme punishment, usually denied dessert for lesser things. I have a total sweet tooth so that worked really well. |
| 43, Indian American— no but would have preferred that to the screaming, door kicking, throwing things violence my father displayed all through my childhood. |
