Totally agree, it has been nice having a year free of parental influence. Hopefully Tom/staff will be involved enough that it will not be too bad.

This question was asked at the beginning of the season by some eager mom ready to get pole position for the popularity contest to be Team Manager at a WS team meeting for a MD team, and Denise Reddy all but laughed and said we don't do that here. She's gone now. Maybe coaches are sick of parent emails and want a buffer.

For the older DA/ECNL clubs, what is the staffs involvement in college recruiting? At showcase tournaments you always see what looks like a random mom passing out team pamphlets to college coaches. What is the process that got your DD to the next level?

The other side of the coin is that in some clubs, the manager may be the only way to get information out. WS VA is a bit different because of Torres, but in general, most coaches at the elite level do not want to interact with parents, so lack of communication is a problem. Not all parent managers are manipulative.

Yea, some are good...some are only in it for their kid. We've all seen it. The one or two parents with access to the coach whose kids get better treatment. It's human nature for the coach to keep the manager happy. It would be better to run the DA teams the way the professional team is run. Parents are not involved in who plays where, who starts, who is added to the team, who is cut etc. Parents write the check and come to games to provide positive support. The coach does the rest....on his own...with mo input from self-interested parents. You open that door a crack, with the type A parents in DA, and there will be mad rush for influence.

Even if there's no actual favoritism, or attempt to gain it, the appearance itself is reason enough not to have a parent involved.

At some DA's they just designate one of the assistant coaches as the "team manager" for all the teams in the academy, so all communication goes through that person. This would never work in a large club, but a DA is only going to have 5 (girls) or 6 (boys) teams total, and they usually practice at the same field, so it's not unmanageable.

There's a lot to like and not like about the DAs, but the near total lack of parental involvement or influence at many of them is one thing they are getting right.

For teams that have managers, what exactly do they do? Are you talking about being the primary communicator or about administrative things like rosters and organizing trips? What else?
