Anyone know what the team manager position entails for a new DA team? No one’s stepped up so far, and I want some insight before I volunteer.
WS doesn't have team managers. They don't want that politics in the club.
There was a rumor going around that WS will be looking for help from a parent or two next year.
I heard it directly from the horse's mouth (Tom) that in fact they will be utilizing "team managers" next year for each of the teams as Denise (in the front office) was too overwhelmed. As to who will be team managers he did not say, but in order to keep costs down and not over leverage existing WS staff, I would assume he would turn to parent volunteers to fill the roles.
Too bad. One thing I really liked about WS was lack of parental influence and favoritism based on who filtered communication with the coach. Hate that BS.
The other side of the coin is that in some clubs, the manager may be the only way to get information out. WS VA is a bit different because of Torres, but in general, most coaches at the elite level do not want to interact with parents, so lack of communication is a problem. Not all parent managers are manipulative.
Yea, some are good...some are only in it for their kid. We've all seen it. The one or two parents with access to the coach whose kids get better treatment. It's human nature for the coach to keep the manager happy. It would be better to run the DA teams the way the professional team is run. Parents are not involved in who plays where, who starts, who is added to the team, who is cut etc. Parents write the check and come to games to provide positive support. The coach does the rest....on his own...with mo input from self-interested parents. You open that door a crack, with the type A parents in DA, and there will be mad rush for influence.
Even if there's no actual favoritism, or attempt to gain it, the appearance itself is reason enough not to have a parent involved. At some DA's they just designate one of the assistant coaches as the "team manager" for all the teams in the academy, so all communication goes through that person. This would never work in a large club, but a DA is only going to have 5 (girls) or 6 (boys) teams total, and they usually practice at the same field, so it's not unmanageable. There's a lot to like and not like about the DAs, but the near total lack of parental involvement or influence at many of them is one thing they are getting right.
