Why are some parents so cold and unfriendly?

It’s this. Truly successful people are outgoing and engaging. Your typical CEO, elected official, senior person in a company etc would not act like this. Your average DC government worker / cog in the wheel will.

I grew up in a wealthy successful family and it was drilled into me to make eye contact, never snub someone, engage etc. One big rule is to never let someone know if you dislike them. Everyone should think you like them.

Whenever people act like you describe you should just assume they weren’t raised better. They likely didn’t have successful parents and/or aren’t successful themselves.

Well then you’re likely volunteering and active in some other way besides work. It’s a risk to your family if you go around acting like OP describes.

In my personal experience I’ve never met someone who was truly raised well and from a good family who acts like OP describes. If you dig deep you can find out they are from the wrong side of the tracks, insecure over something, have mental health issues etc.

Why do you assume people who are casually chatting with you at your kids' school want to be friends with you and obsess over money and work achievements? This is the kind of take I'd expect from someone who isn't very socially intelligent. It's just small talk. It's not that deep.

I’m the poster who first mentioned the metro. I actually never use it. But this week I’m helping out one of my kids with the grandkids (I retired early after making a boat load of money), and I’ve been taking the metro because her house isn’t that close to it and this way I can get a good walk in. I need my daily exercise!

I was surprised to discover that it costs 10 dollar a day round trip and while riding it I actually thought “this is a lot of money for a lot of daily commuters and must be tough for them . . . metro should be free.”
