Thoughts on Syracuse?

FFS. Not everybody pays sticker price. And those who do can afford it. There are lots of things to dislike about Syracuse, but price isn’t one of them. |

dp.. even if you could afford it, why would you pay BMW prices for a Chevy (using PP's example). That's an emotional buy because you think that if you pay a lot you are getting a lot or it's "prestigious". |

I’m not sure that I agree with this, but why does it matter if some people to choose to pay full price for Syracuse or any other private college if they can afford it? I agree that there are wonderful public options available to most people, but not all decisions are driven by cost or ROI alone. I’m sure that these strident views are serving you well and maybe contributing to your price sensitivity. |

If you don’t have “financial need” (about 2/3 of the students) then you have about a 50% chance to get some non-need based aid, and it will be about a $15k discount. Peanuts, doesn’t make Syracuse worth it. If you’re an athlete they’ll give you big bucks though. Yay! |

It doesn’t matter to me at all that other people do stupid things with their money, but if they stupidly and stridently insist that it’s “worth it” then I am happy to point out that it’s not. |

+1 don't care what others do with their money, but this is a forum where people share their opinions.. solicited and otherwise. Of course, I would never say anything to you to your face. I don't think Syracuse is a terrible school, but it's not worth that sticker price. If your kid can get in for near to your in state public, then it makes sense. Otherwise, that's a crazy expensive purchase for what it is. I will say that I did look at this school for DC because it has a specific major that DC is interested in, but I would not pay sticker price for it when the in state public and oos public that is cheaper also have that major. |

So much vitriol! First, I question whether any university is "worth" the current sticker prices. But that aside, we visited Syracuse at spring break and I was not prepared to like it. I was happily surprised. DD also liked the school which hits many items on her wish list (size, cold and snow, programmatic flexibility, athletics and school spirit, etc) but was not wowed by the city. Is it my top choice for DD? Probably not -- but it feels like a solid choice, where she could be involved, happy, and academically engaged, that is in-reach given her qualifications. We live in DC so will be OOS everywhere and will be hoping for some merit at private schools. |

Unless you think going to college is not worth it, public in state is worth the sticker price. As stated, unless you can get aid to bring the cost down to the same level as a reasonable oos cost, Syracuse isn't worth that price. |

As I said in an earlier post, students choose Syracuse for it's vibrant campus life, not the city of Syracuse. Everything revolves around the campus, and there really is not a need or desire to venture off campus very often. |

It all depends several factors together such as what are other options, what are their financial situation, how many kids, etc, etc. I personally think majoring in useless stuff is more stupid. |

Those other factors really do not matter when looking at whether the school is worth it at that sticker price. Whether you have one or 10 kids, you make $1mil or $100K, that school is not worth $80K/year at face value. But agree about the useless major. |

Yes, you can get just as good an education at a state college as a private college. No one disagrees with that. As for prestige, yes there are some state schools which overall are more prestigious than many private schools. The idea that the two experiences are equal is preposterous. I can name many opportunities and programs at SU that would be hard to find at a state college, (all of whom are budget crunched). It depends on what you value. It depends on fit. It depends on the program. It depends on what you can afford. But this argument isn't about Syracuse at all. It's the same effing stupid "public vs private" argument over and over and over again. You can substitute any private college in its place and the argument is just as stupid. |

The argument is not stupid because not all private colleges are the same. No, you can’t substitute any private college. A few are worth “big sticker price full pay”. Most aren’t. There are other private colleges that give a much higher discount to parents than Syracuse, and are in much nicer locations to boot. And there are some private colleges that cost as much as Syracuse but have even less prestige or name recognition. |
