Thoughts on Syracuse?

For a rising HS senior who is pretty sure he wants to study business. If he ends up not doing business for some reason, he'd likely pick a liberal arts major.

What's the vibe overall - what kind of kid goes there? Mostly upstate NY kids? Social scene? Football school? I assume not, not that that matters as DS isn't looking to play college sports. I don't imagine this is a school sending many to Wall Street though IDK - I only say that due to distance from NYC, so it's not like internships during the school year are that easy. Worth it compared to what you can get in this area - Maryland, Va Tech, Penn State etc? This isn't a kid who can get into the b school at UVa, so we're looking at more mid range options that may still be worthwhile in terms of employability etc.

I can't imagine why you want to pay $85,214 a year to send your kid to Syracuse for business. If you're in Virginia send him to JMU.

I went there and I feel like I can answer most of your questions. Overall, I loved it and can recommend it.

Every kind of kid. Seriously. My good friend has a kid there now, and she described it as a "work hard, play hard" vibe. I think that's true. I was in the journalism school, which is a prestigious program, but let's be honest, not a HARD major. I had great grades and internships, and still had a lot of fun. My friends who were science majors, architecture, etc., probably had to work harder than I did, but they also had a lot of fun.

Mostly upstate NY kids?
Not at all. It draws from the whole country. LARGE numbers from Long Island and New Jersey, but you will find nearly every state represented.

Social scene?
Very, very social. But diversified. I think it's about 30% Greek. You definitely don't have to join if you don't want to.

Football school?
Very much so. The games are really fun, even though the team is not that great most years. Basketball games are even more fun, IMO.

I don't imagine this is a school sending many to Wall Street though IDK - I only say that due to distance from NYC, so it's not like internships during the school year are that easy.
I disagree, although you'd have to look into it since I wasn't a business major. I believe the profile of the business school has risen since I was there. There are sooooo many alums in NYC. I can't imagine this is a problem.

Syracuse is VERY expensive. I can't deny that. They used to be generous with merit aid, but I'm not sure about that any more. I think those three schools have a lot of overlap with Syracuse -- a kid who would be happy at one will probably be happy with the others.

I'd add it to your list and go visit.

Syracuse grad 90. Absolutely loved my time at Syracuse!!

Marketing (business?) was a well-regarded program. I was an education major, and I received a great education.

There is tons of school spirit, and a vibrant (beautiful) campus life! The city of Syracuse is a dump, however, the university revolves around the campus, and for the students who choose to go there, the city is not a deterrent because of that reason. It is a "rah-rah" type of school with many social opportunities (Greek or otherwise.) The predominate sports are basketball, football, lax.

Strong alumnae network.

The weather never got me down, and sort of added to the vibe!

Agreed. I feel like the city has some charm, but most kids don't spend much time there.

It's gotta be 4x better for business majors, and it really isn't. Very similar starting salary and ten year salary for majors in finance, accounting, business, economics.

I don’t know how to sugar coat this or say it nicely, so I’ll just say that some people prefer to pay $85k so that they’re around other people paying $85k. They’d never even consider JMU

If you do a search in this forum, Syracuse is mentioned often.

I replied in a post about spring break visits and said:
We did Syracuse over Spring Break. We are FCPS and there was a Loudoun family and two from MCPS in our tour group for the general admin session! We were there on Tuesday of Spring Break and it had snowed 6in the previous Saturday so snow piled up still. By the end of touring Tuesday though it was almost all gone and our coats were off. Students seem to appreciate the good weather days even more.

We really loved the school -- it seems like a place that if you know exactely what you want to study and it's not necessarily a cut and dry major, they will help you create a plan of study. OR if you don't know exactly what you want to do, they will help you creat a plan of study! It seemed that everyone was a double major (two majors from the same school at Cuse) OR a Dual Major (two majors from different schools within the University).

We did the general info session and tour of the campus, then a session with just the Business School (Whitman) and after lunch we went back for a info session with Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. High touch from admins and faculty and met great students. Really enjoyed the experience -- I guess when you are paying $85k or whatever, at least you do seem to get what you pay for??


Now, two months after our visit and it still has left a good impression on our kid. Score-wise I guess it might be more of a target/likely for them (1510 super score SAT, uw 4.0 with full IB diploma classes, varsity athlete, and good ECs) but it is stil high on the list of places they could see themselves. We are in NOVA and they don't want to look at JMU.

With those stats, you will likely be offered a Presidential Scholarship which is 50% off tuition. My DD was and her stats were lower.

UMiami of the north. Fun mid-sized private school for reasonably bright kids with money who like to have a good time.
