where is KSAC/RMSC going?

I believe it will be multiple locations, sometimes even within a group. For those of us with multiple practices per week, it could look scary to start, but I’m trying to keep an open mind for now.

I think you are right it will be multiple locations which will not be great either. It would help if they’d tell us to plan. We may have to drop out.

Please do - what age group, we might fill your spot.

Aren't you charming. If your kid is that good or there is space, they will get it. Most likely we'll just pay and go 1-2 times a week.

It's not that easy, but the more slots that open up with unhappy people dropping out, the more opportunity there is. This past July, there were just 4 slots(!) open/available for KSAC Juniors and over 100 kids trying out.

So, by all means, if you have to drop out due to the new practice locations or you don't think you are getting good value for your money please do drop out - there are plenty of us on the outside looking in that would love to have an opportunity to fill these vacated slots. Life is too short, no sense in paying good money for something you aren't happy with and will be underutilized/unappreciated.

Try Rockville spring tryout!

I’m sure RMSC will accommodate the elite swimmers who ask to go to another site. Their swimmers who are not in the advanced training groups are the ones who are going to be told they just have to deal with it or go elsewhere.

The elite swimmers will probably be more flexible if they like their coaches. It’s the rest of us who it’s going to impact. They should tell us especially we had to prepay for summer.

There’s only so much flexibility if it’s making the trip to the pool go from 10 minutes to 40, but switching to Rockville or MLK would only add say 10 minutes to the trip. As the parent of an elite swimmer (not at KSAC) there is only so much inconvenience I would be willing to take on before I would say we want to go to site X instead or we will be reaching out to NCAP and ASA.

For a lot of us, the kids and families are invested. They love their coaches and teammates. There is not a culture of club hopping in this group (elite HS), and there are certain places the kids will refuse to go and kids who won't split up.

I think it's going to be harder to keep the younger families in this group. Those of us in the older half are hoping for a decent schedule and our kids to drive.

Younger KSAC family here. Our kid loves their coaches and swim friends too and switching clubs even at this stage would be really really tough. But yeah not willing to drive 40 + mins each way to take my kid to practice. Really hoping for a practice location relatively close to KSAC!

Anonymous wrote:Did they not do a survey to ask which location families would prefer?

I also wonder how this would impact summer tryout? Might be easier to get in to RMSC KSAC due to the unknown?

Id think it would be easier. but depending on the pool size at the new practice site(s), I wonder if they’ll have a reduced group size? Do any pools on the list have as much space as KSAC?

A lot of coaches are going to leave if it’s glenmont or downtown SS.

Downtown Silver Spring would pretty much be a nightmare during rush - Ga. Ave is essentially a war zone at that hour and then you'll have to scavenge, and pay for a parking space - the always unknown and variable amount of time you will have to allot for this along with cost of parking makes this a reason to look elsewhere(Parking estimate: $5 * 5x/wk * 45 wks = $1125 - could be more!).

Gleaming is good except winter. Most parents except little ones drop off but agree rush hour would be bad but it will be even worse for those down county to go to Gaithersburg.

That another consideration for parents of the tweens and teens not yet driving. They are used to drop off, but if the increased time it takes to get and from the pool or the parking situation makes it so dropping off and coming back doesn’t make sense that is a huge PITA.

We've always had to wait at KASC so it's a non-issue.

For you it’s not, but that isn’t the case for everyone.

We don’t live close enough to drop off, go home and come back. Surprise not everyone is in Bethesda or Rockville or Potomac.

We have no issue paying and not going often. There are times we do that now. But to send families to Gaithersburg or upper Rockville only works if you are on that side of town. It’s always been difficult to get spots past mini's the only way to get a spot is your kid is amazing or someone drops out.

The junior coach is one to be avoided.

Same thing could be said about sending families to downtown Silver Spring - not going to work for many families and if you have to pay for parking that's an additional expense/burden that isn't part of the current situation or at Glenmont, Gaithersburg, Rockville, etc.

I don't know anything about thee junior coaches but based on their enrollment and the demand, it doesn't seem like there are many families avoiding anything at RSMC/KSAC so maybe your sentiment isn't universal. Which is not to say it isn't valid for YOU and/or your child/situation.

RMSC Rockville is really crowded and unfortunately they will take everyone. Sometimes ago, some groups will have 20 swimmers per lane. They will have to take turn but it sucks as now you basically only have half of the allocated time for practice.

Good question. They should move KSAC there and open up another RMSC or open it up to other swim groups.

NP - the new SS pool isn't big enough to host the full KSAC RMSC group or any other that's reasonably large. The lack of parking absolutely sucks and it's also very poorly designed for dropping off in front, as you can do at KSAC. My kids swim at Fairland, so I have no dog in the swim club fight, but as an adult swimmer it's annoying AF. The new pool seems built primarily for people who live within walking distance. That's great for them - truly - but not helpful for alleviating the gap left by KSAC's renovation.

They could use the new pool for competitions, I think, at least smaller ones. The main lap pool could have 10 lanes (maybe 8) across, which is fine. It's the space outside the pool that would prohibit larger meets, not to mention the parking issue.

If there is no closer pool what other option do we have but to do it. Mine are in multiple activities and yes, we find a way to make it work and will continue to. We will stay due to cost and other expensive activities. Moving pools is only an option for the top kids.
