I’m sure RMSC will accommodate the elite swimmers who ask to go to another site. Their swimmers who are not in the advanced training groups are the ones who are going to be told they just have to deal with it or go elsewhere.
The elite swimmers will probably be more flexible if they like their coaches. It’s the rest of us who it’s going to impact. They should tell us especially we had to prepay for summer.
There’s only so much flexibility if it’s making the trip to the pool go from 10 minutes to 40, but switching to Rockville or MLK would only add say 10 minutes to the trip. As the parent of an elite swimmer (not at KSAC) there is only so much inconvenience I would be willing to take on before I would say we want to go to site X instead or we will be reaching out to NCAP and ASA.
For a lot of us, the kids and families are invested. They love their coaches and teammates. There is not a culture of club hopping in this group (elite HS), and there are certain places the kids will refuse to go and kids who won't split up.
I think it's going to be harder to keep the younger families in this group. Those of us in the older half are hoping for a decent schedule and our kids to drive.
A lot of coaches are going to leave if it’s glenmont or downtown SS.
Glenmont is overblown and a non-issue - it's 10 minutes from KSAC along a more rush hour favorable east-west traversal as opposed to north-south traversal)
Downtown Silver Spring would pretty much be a nightmare during rush - Ga. Ave is essentially a war zone at that hour and then you'll have to scavenge, and pay for a parking space - the always unknown and variable amount of time you will have to allot for this along with cost of parking makes this a reason to look elsewhere(Parking estimate: $5 * 5x/wk * 45 wks = $1125 - could be more!).
Gleaming is good except winter. Most parents except little ones drop off but agree rush hour would be bad but it will be even worse for those down county to go to Gaithersburg.
The differentiator here is the parking. At KSAC, there is NEVER a time where I can't find a parking spot. The same will be true at Gaithersburg. And there is no cost - drive up, park in the same few spots/aisle and 60 seconds to walk in. All known, expected and repeats pretty much the same way every time. I haven't yet been to Silver Spring but the accounts I'm hearing is that there is just paid parking... where is it, how much will it cost, how crowded is it... all unknowns and if/when known will likely range from "bad" to "worse"... and certainly not what you get at KSAC, Glenmont, Gaithersburg, etc.
