Ave is essentially a war zone at that hour and then you'll have to scavenge, and pay for a parking space - the always unknown and variable amount of time you will have to allot for this along with cost of parking makes this a reason to look elsewhere(Parking estimate: $5 * 5x/wk * 45 wks = $1125 - could be more!).

Gleaming is good except winter. Most parents except little ones drop off but agree rush hour would be bad but it will be even worse for those down county to go to Gaithersburg.

That another consideration for parents of the tweens and teens not yet driving. They are used to drop off, but if the increased time it takes to get and from the pool or the parking situation makes it so dropping off and coming back doesn’t make sense that is a huge PITA.

I'm more concerned of the safety of SS pool area. I remembered someone was killed in a Wayne ave garage stairwell and still unsolved. not far away from the SS pool...

Which leads me to this: Why build a competition pool (complete with starting blocks that I've seen in pictures) if you have no plans to utilize it as such?

The differentiator here is the parking. At KSAC, there is NEVER a time where I can't find a parking spot. The same will be true at Gaithersburg. And there is no cost - drive up, park in the same few spots/aisle and 60 seconds to walk in. All known, expected and repeats pretty much the same way every time. I haven't yet been to Silver Spring but the accounts I'm hearing is that there is just paid parking... where is it, how much will it cost, how crowded is it... all unknowns and if/when known will likely range from "bad" to "worse"... and certainly not what you get at KSAC, Glenmont, Gaithersburg, etc.

You can drop off your kid and go somewhere else or find street parking that is a bit further/free. There aer options. Its not ideal but KSAC is really gross and needs repairs.

Aren't you charming. If your kid is that good or there is space, they will get it. Most likely we'll just pay and go 1-2 times a week.

We've always had to wait at KASC so it's a non-issue.

For you it’s not, but that isn’t the case for everyone.

The concern about the SS pool is lack of parking for the older swimmers who drive themselves. Practices can be as early as 4:30am or as late as 8pm. I wouldn’t want my my teenage daughter or son walking those few blocks when it’s dark.

Oh I agree that KSAC is due and those repairs/upgrades are going to happen, finally - I'm not arguing against that. My point is that of the alternative locations being bandied about, downtown Silver Spring is the least desirable from a transportation logistics stand-point for the reasons listed. But, I'm sure it's nice once you are inside.

As someone else mentioned, and I've heard this as well, the solution they end up with will likely involve multiple locations so any given group will not be going to the same pool for all their practices throughout the year. My hope is that they can make use of the downtown Silver Spring location for the meets that have traditionally been at KSAC but otherwise it figures in VERY minimally for practice use.

It's not that easy, but the more slots that open up with unhappy people dropping out, the more opportunity there is. This past July, there were just 4 slots(!) open/available for KSAC Juniors and over 100 kids trying out.

So, by all means, if you have to drop out due to the new practice locations or you don't think you are getting good value for your money please do drop out - there are plenty of us on the outside looking in that would love to have an opportunity to fill these vacated slots. Life is too short, no sense in paying good money for something you aren't happy with and will be underutilized/unappreciated.

I would certainly advise anyone whose kid really wants to swim for RMSC but is not super fast to pick KSAC as the site to try out for this summer. I imagine the state of flux will reduce the number of people interested in joining that site and some of its current swimmers may have moved elsewhere.
