The Shift in the Democratic Party

What happened to the party? This use to be the party of free speech, anti-war, about freedom of religion and about helping the poor and disaffected that were hurt by the pains of globalization.

I have seen over the past decade the party being completely co-opted by the military industrial complex, to the point where people are foaming at the mouth over wanting to fight in Ukraine. I have seen the party completely ditch the struggling blue collar worker to get into bed with large tech billionaires. I have seen it now completely on the side of censorship and the use of authoritarian tactics when it comes with dealing with oppositional speech.

The democratic party now reminds me of the neocons of the Bush era? Anyone else get this feeling?

Our politicians are bought by corporations. Neither side gives a F about workers.

Except that Democrats supports workers’ rights, unions, workers safety, C suite sharing profits with the employees who helped earn those profits, minimum wage and living wages, health care for all and the GOP opposes all of the above.

So yeah. Samesies. Both sides. Orrrrr anyone both sidesing this is a garbage Republican.

PP here. Agreed. No not the same. I’m a Democrat and will never vote for the current GOP. I believe in climate change. I’m pro choice. Support LBGTQ rights. I’m scared of the Christian fascists. Im pro workers’ rights. But I still think the powerful on both sides do not have the interests of the average American at heart. It all boils down to money and the 1% having all the power.

Why is Joe going to the Picket line and how exactly does that help the 1%?

Trump may be going to the Detroit area, but he is not going in sympathy for the union strikers. To the contrary, he supports an Oligarch class where workers are treated like chattel.

I’m with you OP but not specifically for all of the reasons you mentioned. I grew up as economically progressive, socially conservative dem. I left the party about 20 years ago. I don’t vote now.

So you prefer a white christian authoritarian state. That'll show 'em.

Neither party comes anywhere near my values. I prefer to remain honest to myself.

Voting is public transport, not a marriage. Get on the bus.

No thanks. I’m fine with not voting.

When the leopards come for your face, don't complain.

Are leopards known for eating faces? You're really obsessed with this metaphor.

You might be new to the internet. It’s not that PP’s “obsession.”

The fact that it's an internet meme doesn't make it an idea that has relevance in a discussion. It's also not a metaphor that makes any sense. Leopards aren't known for eating people's faces to begin with, so it certainly doesn't make sense to constantly bring it up and say, "you didn't expect leopards to eat YOUR face!" Well no, they aren't really known for that, and faces aren't fleshy and appealing to predators, so none of it makes any sense. Do you all ever stop to think about how much sense your meme-ified slogans about leopards and 'musica and bleach actually makes to the average target of the insult? Because it just sounds bizarre.

+1 He’s going to a non-union shop in the middle of a strike.

The New Democrats under Clinton are when the party shifted. Clinton pushed through welfare reform, balanced the budget, and supported NAFTA

Yes, Clinton's economic policies were to the right of those of Nixon.

No. Clinton’s policies were moderate because he had to cut deals with a Congress led by Gingrich, Armey, Delay, Dole, and Lott. He got significant progressive policies as part of those deals. Nixon appears somewhat reasonable on a few issues only because he had to work with a heavily Democratic pro-labor Congress.

Start with being honest with the positions of the party. Because you have not come anywhere CLOSE to describing the positions of the democratic party in your OP. So start with shutting down the cable news channels and Twitter, and educating yourself. Because your post shows you're not really educated about the issues, or the parties' positions, at all. Not even a little.

NP here and I agree with OP about not voting. How can you in good conscience vote for either party as they are both nightmares. We've lost our way politically in that there's no candidates for either party that deserve my vote. I don't agree you have to cast a vote for someone you don't believe in. That's settling and that's being dishonest with everyone including yourself. I simply don't feel the need to pretend one party is better than the other because while I'm a social liberal who is strongly pro choice and pro immigration, I think the Dems have lost their way on so many levels. The Left is extreme now - cancel culture is very real and it's scary.

You guys are such crybabies with this bullshit. Do you think Blacks or other minorities or liberal women or any of the other underrepresented people in US history were thrilled about either of the party nominees in most elections in the past 150 years? You act like you are the first people in history who are disappointed in your options. I’ve been voting since 1976 and I’ve only strongly supported 2 nominees out of 12 presidential elections. I’m a Democrat and end up supporting the Democratic nominee against whatever fascist or bigot or corporate stooge or corrupt idiot the Republicans nominate, but in open years my preferred candidate almost never wins the Democratic nomination. Biden is not my top choice but he is many times better than the alternative.

If nobody deserves your vote, then you deserve anarchy. Stop with the "many sides" bs, and ffs turn off cable news. It has obviously weakened your brain.

I answered why our president is going to Detroit. I’ll bet you know more about Clinton Twp than my neighborhood in the Detroit city limits.
