The Shift in the Democratic Party

What happened to the party? This use to be the party of free speech, anti-war, about freedom of religion and about helping the poor and disaffected that were hurt by the pains of globalization.

I have seen over the past decade the party being completely co-opted by the military industrial complex, to the point where people are foaming at the mouth over wanting to fight in Ukraine. I have seen the party completely ditch the struggling blue collar worker to get into bed with large tech billionaires. I have seen it now completely on the side of censorship and the use of authoritarian tactics when it comes with dealing with oppositional speech.

The democratic party now reminds me of the neocons of the Bush era? Anyone else get this feeling?

No quite the opposite.

I increasingly get the feeling that they are the only responsible adults running the show.

When their guys act badly they immediately call for resignation - current fiasco with Senator M.

The Republicans stand behind all kinds of appalling public behavior and act as if opposing abortion is the only moral issue that matters.

Republicans are not against war. They just love Russia too much.

Is this a joke, how about 10% for the big guy huh?

If Biden really did what the right-wing propaganda machine so desperately wants him to have done, every Democrat on here would be calling for his resignation. Instead, all that exists are emails that don't say what you want them to say, witnesses who don't corroborate what you want them to corroborate, and investigations that don't conclude what you want them to conclude.

Face it. When Democrats commit malfeasance, the caucus holds them accountable. When Republicans commit malfeasance, the caucus circles the wagons to protect their own. It's disgusting.

I’m with you OP but not specifically for all of the reasons you mentioned. I grew up as economically progressive, socially conservative dem. I left the party about 20 years ago. I don’t vote now.

So you prefer a white christian authoritarian state. That'll show 'em.

Neither party comes anywhere near my values. I prefer to remain honest to myself.

Start with being honest with the positions of the party. Because you have not come anywhere CLOSE to describing the positions of the democratic party in your OP. So start with shutting down the cable news channels and Twitter, and educating yourself. Because your post shows you're not really educated about the issues, or the parties' positions, at all. Not even a little.

LMAO. I’m not OP.

Then the same holds true for you.

Actually the politics thread here continually reinforces my belief that I made the right decision to drop support of the two major parties. I will still go with third party or write-ins as I promised above. No self-loathing here. I feel great! Peace, friend!

Voting is public transport, not a marriage. Get on the bus.

No thanks. I’m fine with not voting.

The New Democrats under Clinton are when the party shifted. Clinton pushed through welfare reform, balanced the budget, and supported NAFTA

Clinton was progressive but a deal maker. He negotiated mild welfare reform with the Republican House and Senate and got a minimum wage increase and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program as part of the deal. Also got them to approve the tobacco settlement that was a windfall for states to use as matching funds for SCHIP. NAFTA was started by Reagan and negotiated by Bush. Clinton got side agreements on labor and environment added and established the Trade Adjustment Assistance program with extra benefits, training, etc. for workers displaced by trade. The budget was balanced mainly because the economy was great under Clinton, we reduced or at least stopped increasing defense spending after the USSR collapsed, and no big stupid unnecessary tax cut package was enacted.

Clinton was also the last newly elected president that made sense from the standpoint of resume and fitness for office. Go figure. We did begin to see a growing amount of toxicity in relationships between congressional leaders and the Clinton Administration in the 90s but that environment was much less toxic than today's environment. Bottom line- government functioned at an acceptable level in the 90s. Government isn't currently functioning at an acceptable level.

Yes, Newt Gingrich's gaslighting "contract on America" and then the 'lie trap" that the right set for Clinton to impeach him for lying about a blowjob, all fun and games.

Let's see the bank records. Until then, it is just talk. We need facts and the GOP has yet to provide them.

You might be new to the internet. It’s not that PP’s “obsession.”

Our politicians are bought by corporations. Neither side gives a F about workers.

Except that Democrats supports workers’ rights, unions, workers safety, C suite sharing profits with the employees who helped earn those profits, minimum wage and living wages, health care for all and the GOP opposes all of the above.

So yeah. Samesies. Both sides. Orrrrr anyone both sidesing this is a garbage Republican.
