The Shift in the Democratic Party

Been a democrat all my life, voted for Obama, Clinton and reluctantly for Biden over the last election.
What happened to the party? This use to be the party of free speech, anti-war, about freedom of religion and about helping the poor and disaffected that were hurt by the pains of globalization.

I have seen over the past decade the party being completely co-opted by the military industrial complex, to the point where people are foaming at the mouth over wanting to fight in Ukraine. I have seen the party completely ditch the struggling blue collar worker to get into bed with large tech billionaires. I have seen it now completely on the side of censorship and the use of authoritarian tactics when it comes with dealing with oppositional speech.

The democratic party now reminds me of the neocons of the Bush era? Anyone else get this feeling?

It is still the party of free speech, but we are in a "cold war" with propagandists from China, Russia etc who are attacking our country via bought news outlets, social media channels etc, so how do we fight that war while maintaining first amendment freedoms?

Anti war is still anti-war, but standing up to a regional bully with nuclear weapons by sending arms to help fight the bully is not the same as committing troops to send abroad for endless missions or unwinnable wars. You cannot equate support for the Ukrainian people and anything in the Vietnam War era. they aren't the same.

Freedom of religion...I don't even know what you are referring to. If anything. the GOP is treading on my rights with their imposition of their interpretation of Christian values on to my non-Christian self, particularly where abortion is concerned.

This administration has done more to shift resources to the poor and abandoned than any administration since the New Deal.

You are really going to have to have some specifics to lay context to your complaints.

You are delusional, OP. The Democratic Party is the same as it was under Clinton and Obama. Nothing radical has happened on our side. How can anyone look at current politics and government and suggest that Democrats are the problem?

I share your concerns OP. But I would never vote Republican. Republicans are for all the things you hate, except even worse. Big tech and free speech? Like the conservatives troll-emperor, Elon Musk?

On the military-industrial complex, I agree with you. I came of political age during the W Bush administration when the Democrats and the left were antiwar. I think helping Ukraine is important but there should at least be a game plan.

However, Republicans want war with Mexico. They tried to start war with Iran. They’re against normalizing relations with Cuba. They recognize an illegitimate government in Venezuela. They’d probably like war with China, who knows, they talk out of both sides of their mouth. I find it interesting that Republicans suddenly posture as anti-war when it’s Putin, who on cultural issues aligns suspiciously close to them.

It’s not suspicious and has little to do with values. Values are for the rubes. They are awash in foreign dark money. They’ve been bought.

Democrats have never been anti-war, except for a brief period from about 1968-75. WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam were all prosecuted under Democratic administrations. Obama continued the GW Bush war on terrorism. National security has been historically a bipartisan issue, and should continue to be so.

Ah Yes, everyone who disagree with you on everything from the role of government (jeffersonian vs hamiltonian), the right interpretation of the constitution (progressive vs
originalist) is a foreign agent and should be censored. War is always used as justification for the suspension of freedom (see the Patriot Act), and we never get it back, ever!

Ok, but what about Syria? what about staying for so long to nation build in Afghanistan? Those were all under Obama. The greatest increase in US military and supplemental
spending all came under the Obama administration. The democrats are literally part of the war lobby.

The New Democrats under Clinton are when the party shifted. Clinton pushed through welfare reform, balanced the budget, and supported NAFTA
