From my understanding he was on good terms with his ex wife. I know it’s fun to speculate but she is a very kind, very sweet person. I am 100% certain she had nothing to do with this.

Bob was a complete night owl. I know back in his coding days, he’d do those crazy hackathons all night. He had no problem staying up late. It is absolutely no surprise to me he was out at 2:30 am. He was probably working late or catching up with a friend at a local bar.

I so wish I could go back in time and tell him to stay in. We are all scratching our heads. I think he must have come across a mentally ill person or just someone who wanted to murder another human being. Bob wasn’t stupid, if he had been mugged he would’ve handed over everything. And he kept good company. He didn’t have enemies. It’s really senseless.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

Thank you. It’s a harsh reminder to live life to the fullest, as there are no guarantees.

My husband works in tech and travels to SF and the silicon Valley area for work often. I'm always worried because they have events until late in the night and then go back to the hotel. His boss was savagely beaten in front of a nice hotel in a nice area, where he was staying, and the doorman didn't intervene or call the cops. It sounds like the same thing happened to Bob, with no one helping. It's so awful to know that not only could it happen, but bystanders will not come to your aid. Something has to change.

That said, SF has a real problem with mentally ill people on the streets, regardless of this incident.

I believe I read it was on the sidewalk near his luxury hotel. He had moved to Miami and was only back for a day or so. Very sad.

2:35am. Was he outside? Did it happen in the hotel ?

It's sad what SF has become. I lived there 15 years ago and it was a beautiful city to walk around in.

Why don’t people just stay on the Peninsula in Menlo Park or something, it’s a 30 minute Uber.

As others have said, I am so sorry for your loss and can't stop thinking about this man's family left behind.

They just had an expert on CNN about this. She said that if you look at the numbers, it’s petty crime that’s way up in SF. Things like smashed car windows and muggings. But that the violent crime rate is still below many other cities, she cited Houston as having a much higher rate. She then talked about the Mayor, London Breed, who is “fed up” and trying to do something about it.

See, this is the problem. In a modern, civilized city lots of people are out and about in the center of any city, look at Europe, there are tourists 24/7 in big cities in their “historic centers”. And here it’s implied that it’s dangerous to be out after sundown. It is somewhat true for SF unfortunately

This wasn’t the center of the city. It’s sort of a weird neighborhood near the water, lots of warehousey type buildings. Some have been converted to offices or condos but definitely not an area that would be considered anything near a city center, tourist center, nightlife area, restaurant center, or any of that.

I know they are divorced but it’s too bad he wasn’t staying with his family while in town and avoided this tragedy.

Thank you. I haven’t seen his ex wife in years but she was an excellent mother when the kids were little. And his family was very close. I have no doubt they’ll rally around the kids and each other.

We can criticize his choices that night (why that area? Why so late? Were there no Ubers?) but I know my friend and he didn’t go looking for trouble. There is a dangerous criminal out there and I hope they can find out who did this and get him off the street.

There are condos and such, but it’s not an area with a lot of nightlife and there’s more industrial areas right around it.

My DD lives and works in Rincon. The are has businesses and highrises. It was a very safe white neighborhood until about 2 years ago when SF decided to set up a sort of homeless sanctioned encampment. People had bought condos for over $1M right before the city set up the tented encampment. Now, and especially with this murder, no one can sell.

I wonder if this is true though. Activists in DC try to make similar claims: “crime is down! [compared to 1990! just ignore the fact that it has increased in the past 5 years!]”. “Violent crime is down!” [just ignore murders and carjackings.] “It’s only petty crime that’s up!” [Silly you for caring about muggings and car break-ins!]

Rincon Hill is a nice downtown neighborhood and different than what is typically classified SOMA (despite it technically being soma) . He was steps from some of the most expensive condos in the city. True, walking in the early AM in this area can still be risky, but it's not a high crime area nor a spot one might expect to encounter random murders.

Such a terrible tragedy. I read he was walking back to his hotel after meeting friends for drinks. Thinking of his friends and family.

Interesting. It sounds very similar to NoMa in DC - tons of new development but still sketchy.
