Well, if you are not a fan, she will be gone after this year, so nothing more to worry about.

You must have missed the announcement that she is getting her doctorate and postponing her retirement.

If that's true, I did. When was it announced? Was there an email? I'll admit I don't read everything we get from her closely.

Seems an odd move, although this probably means MCPS will pay for the degree.

She buried the lede in her weekly email from March 13

That she did. I'd love to know why she thinks her attending this program will help (at least in the short term) CCES students. It would seem likely that she would be pretty distracted by being in a PhD. program. And if it is that part-time a program, by the time she would finish it, she would almost certainly be ready to retire.

When I completed my Bachelor and Master’s degree, I was ready for the doctoral program but life put that decision on the side for a while. In the past two weeks, an opportunity of a lifetime has presented itself to me, to work on my doctoral degree. This decision has been filled with a list of pros and cons yet my passion for learning is still front and center. I have been accepted into a doctoral program and I could not be more excited. With this decision, I knew that this will support CCES, or students, families, and staff so I am setting my retirement aside for now. My journey will always have CCES in the forefront. I look forward to applying my new found knowledge for our children.

I'm sure MCPS is paying, and I just don't understand how someone can run a school and get a doctoral degree at the same time and do either well. I'm not sure why MCPS would agree to it.

MCPS has tuition reimbursement but it is pretty limited. I doubt they are paying more for her to get her doctorate that they would for anyone else.

She is probably staying so she can do her research thesis on data from CCES.
Also the limited reimbursement is still better than nothing.
I hope she is not doing an online doctoral program in education as those are pretty lame

But what happened with the sub?

My DC was in the class with Mr. S and while it seems his behavior was very strange, but nothing scandalous. I’m getting this from an 11 year old who clearly was unnerved by the whole experience (the sub’s behavior, the class interview afterwards, learning of his firing, other kids’ reactions etc), but it seems the sub was frustrated with the kids and told them he once threw a desk when subbing in another county and thus can no longer work in that county. My DC kept saying that he and the other kids felt “threatened” bc the sub was being impatient, raised his voice and told the kids this out of frustration. There may be more to it but this was the most I could confirm from my DC’s recounting of the episode.
I guess he wrote a letter of apology to the kids and it was read to them yesterday. I get the impression that admin and other teachers think this is getting a bit blown out of proportion, as the kids are being told to stop gossiping ab it and be on better behavior with substitutes. Unfortunately, I think the cryptic letter left families imagining the worst.

Thanks for the info, even with the caveat that it relies on an 11 year old. That definitely sounds far less problematic than one would have expected with someone getting summarily fired and a letter like that going home.

Is there not a background check for subs that would pick that up?

Makes me wonder what else isn’t found. (Not about his guy, but in general)

I don't think a background check would pick up soething like that, and this really seems to be to be not that big a deal. Yes, it's appropriate that he not be asked back to sub -- he probably feels the same way.

I know someone who had some free time and decided to sub because she really wanted to just help out the schools that are in desperate need of subs. The kids were really disrespectful and wouldn't listen to her, and she definitely ended up raising her voice and there was some swearing involved. (My kid told me.) She's a nice person and was genuinely just doing it to try to help the school. I really don't think we can expect subs to be super human and not lose their temper a little when confronted with the behavior they have to deal with. We have a massive sub shortage. Of course, they shouldn't do stuff like threaten kids or hit them, but flaming someone online for losing their temper and yelling at ill-behaved kids is really counter-productive. Already this is a job no one wants. If you've never raised your voice to your kids ever in your life, then maybe you should take a leave of absence from your job and go sub, because they need all the saints to do that.

My child was a witness to the behavior and it went well beyond that. I am grateful he is no longer going to sub.
