OP again - yes, that too. Elian's father was a puppet of the Castro regime.

Even a “puppet of the Castro regime” has the right to raise his own son, particularly when the mother is dead.

I don't disagree. The flip side is that the mother gave her life to bring her son to freedom.

It seems to me that many liberals/Dems view Cuba in a semi-positive light. Mostly I think because of misinformation. The idea that education is "free", that the health care system is any good, etc. Those of us who grew up there, went to school there, and still have family there know better.

Do Cubans really think they're white? Do they realize white people don't and just use them and they don't care or what?

Many Cubans are white though. Direct descendants of Europeans

But in the US people use the one drop rule. White southerners don't think of Cubans as white. No matter how European they are. They are just as likely to be discriminated against as most other wealthy Latinos. Which is to say less likely than dark
skinned Mexicans and Guatemalans, but more likely than people who don't speak Spanish and read as fully Americanized.

The “one drop rule” does not apply here. We are talking about people who are direct descendants of SPANIARDS. And guess what? Spain is a European country. Not all europeans are blonde/blue-eyed. Why is that so hard to understand?

Ah ah ah ah . Keep telling yourself that amigo. You're definitely not Anglo Saxon and that's more than enough for most white people to see you as an intruder.

DP. Sigh.

I am a light-skinned Latina. I have some indigenous ancestry but look White. My parents have accents and have never experienced any explicit discrimination based on how they speak, or their names. I have had some people make uncomfortable comments (often White people opining on my racial identity), but nothing like the BIPOC people in my life who cannot pass as White. I don't doubt that I've experienced some discrimination that was not explicit, but to suggest that most White people see me as an intruder is absurd.

Stop fixating on light-skinned Latinos. We are a minority that is not worth your energy. Most Latinos in the United States have visible Afro and indigenous features and are subject to racial discrimination on the basis of this. That doesn't mean all Latinos need to have the same political positions or are beholden to the Democratic party. I say this as someone who is a progressive Democrat.

Of course. Point being, lighter skinned Hispanics can be racist also. Anti Immigrant, even anti-Hispanic.

DP. Ugh…you just don’t get it.

Except, in Spain he'd be a nobody. Not invited in the circles that he delusionally believes he belongs to .

Looks like Cubans are prone to misinformation. Is Cuba a socialist country? Can you list what is socialism and whether Cuba adheres to that? Also you seem to be saying Democrats policies smell like socialism. Please list Democrats policies which would be a socialism. I really want to understand what real policy (not GOP talking points) makes Cuban believe one party is tending towards socialism.

1. taxing the rich to help the poor
2. single payer health care
3. many other "social safety net" programs which tax higher income earners disproportionately

Interesting. Because when I attended Sunday School we were taught that the more fortunate should help the less fortunate. I don't really have any aspiration to live in society where I have to live in a compound encircled with cement walls with jagged glass and barbed wire embedded in the top of it. And that's what happens when folks don't pay their fair share.

Why did they not stay and fight? They seem likely cowards.

You are an idiot.

This is who the Cubans in south Florida supported but would not fight the communist to keep him in power. They are the typical “conservatives” cowards.

Batista is the same as the Republican Party/conservatives/trump. This is way the Cubans support Trump and the republicans.

Batista moved to Florida, returning to Cuba to run for president in 1952. Facing certain electoral defeat, he led a military coup against President Carlos Prío Socarrás that pre-empted the election.

Back in power and receiving financial, military and logistical support from the United States government, Batista suspended the 1940 Constitution and revoked most political liberties, including the right to strike. He then aligned with the wealthiest landowners who owned the largest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans. Eventually it reached the point where most of the sugar industry was in U.S. hands, and foreigners owned 70% of the arable land. As such, Batista's repressive government then began to systematically profit from the exploitation of Cuba's commercial interests, by negotiating lucrative relationships both with the American Mafia, who controlled the drug, gambling, and prostitution businesses in Havana, and with large U.S.-based multinational companies who were awarded lucrative contracts. To quell the growing discontent amongst the populace—which was subsequently displayed through frequent student riots and demonstrations—Batista established tighter censorship of the media, while also utilizing his Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities secret police to carry out wide-scale violence, torture and public executions. These murders mounted in 1957, as socialist ideas became more influential. Many people were killed, with estimates ranging from hundreds to about 20,000 people killed

The Cubans in south Florida are Batista thugs, apparatchiks, secret police and Mafia who lost all the money they stole and ran to Florida.

NP. Yes to all of the above. Notice the racial and economic makeup of the Cubans who left during the 1960’s through 2000’s. They were all white Cubans who benefited from the legacies of slavery or those running from Spain’s Franco.

Cubans are one of the higher income immigrant groups in Florida, maybe. And that's not saying much , at all.

Yes. The women sewed their diamonds and pearls in their clothes when they fled the island. Upon arrival to the USA, the federal government provided them with low-cost loans to open new businesses.

Most Cubans are mestizo, mixed white and black for generations.

Anglos could try and keep up with facts.

The ones still in Cuba, yes. However the earlier generations of Cuban exiles, absolutely not. They were the ruling class who could not tolerate equality and fled to the USA.

Cubans in south Florida are anti democracy. This is why the have jumped on the trump maga bandwagon. They want to return to Cuban and rule.

The democrats will kiss off the Cubans and remove all restrictions against Cuban.

Speaking of Franco. The James Franco/John Leguizamo Fidel Castro blow up seems relevent. For those that don't know. James Franco was cast as Castro in an upcoming movie. Leguizamo, a Colombian American who famously played a steroetypical Italian video game character, had a huge fit about a white guy playing a a famous latin american. Turns out Franco is Spanish American (hispanic?) and his family is from the exact same part of Spain as Castro's. Life is strange and the world is complicated and full of nuance. Things aren't black and white. It behooves us all to remember that.
