Democrats ended the whole Elian Gonzalez thing as well which was very unpopular with Miami Cubans.

OP again - yes, that too. Elian's father was a puppet of the Castro regime.

Even a “puppet of the Castro regime” has the right to raise his own son, particularly when the mother is dead.

I don't disagree. The flip side is that the mother gave her life to bring her son to freedom.

It seems to me that many liberals/Dems view Cuba in a semi-positive light. Mostly I think because of misinformation. The idea that education is "free", that the health care system is any good, etc. Those of us who grew up there, went to school there, and still have family there know better.

Do Cubans really think they're white? Do they realize white people don't and just use them and they don't care or what?

Many Cubans are white though. Direct descendants of Europeans

But in the US people use the one drop rule. White southerners don't think of Cubans as white. No matter how European they are. They are just as likely to be discriminated against as most other wealthy Latinos. Which is to say less likely than dark
skinned Mexicans and Guatemalans, but more likely than people who don't speak Spanish and read as fully Americanized.

The “one drop rule” does not apply here. We are talking about people who are direct descendants of SPANIARDS. And guess what? Spain is a European country. Not all europeans are blonde/blue-eyed. Why is that so hard to understand?

This.

Many US progressives live in LaLaLand.

Immigrants and immigrants' kids know better.

Americans have a tough time understanding not everyone is as racist as they are.

Especially Dems, who have had a quite fixed dogma around this for a couple hundred years.

I lived in Miami and none of this matters to Cubans. If you are racist towards them they react the same way as white people, with a confused shrug of their shoulders. Honestly if you look at the makeup of judges, political offices, etc in Florida you would find that FL Republicans have zero issue voting for Cubans while the Democratic bench in FL politics is exceptionally weak. In fact, making your above argument to Cubans would probably make them more likely to vote R.

This is the shift I referred to earlier. This is what you sacrificed when you embraced Trump.

First Latina Elected To Congress Retires With A Warning To Republicans
https://www.npr.org/2018/12/14/676590509/first-latina-elected-to-congress-retires-with-a-warning-to-republicans

Republican Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen warned party leaders that what she sees as the GOP's focus on conservative, white, male voters harms its electoral prospects. In an interview with Morning Edition host Rachel Martin, Ros-Lehtinen said Republicans would "lose this whole generation" if it did not "aggressively pursue" young voters.

Ros-Lehtinen has had a historic career, as the first Latina and first Cuban-American in Congress, as well as being the first woman to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

… I'm not saying that I'm leaving because Donald Trump got elected. I'm a Republican, but I did not vote for Donald Trump. I'm a Jeb Bush Republican. I'm a George W. Bush Republican. We had a lovely Mass for Bush 41, and I'm thinking, boy those speeches. Can they really be made this day in age? Things have changed. My party has changed.

They didn't say they are going to vote for Democrats. It's basically saying they will vote for DeSantis or just not vote for Trump.

Looks like Cubans are prone to misinformation. Is Cuba a socialist country? Can you list what is socialism and whether Cuba adheres to that? Also you seem to be saying Democrats policies smell like socialism. Please list Democrats policies which would be a socialism. I really want to understand what real policy (not GOP talking points) makes Cuban believe one party is tending towards socialism.

1. taxing the rich to help the poor
2. single payer health care
3. many other "social safety net" programs which tax higher income earners disproportionately

I hate to pick on a dead person but no she didn't. She was hoping to make it to the US with him. Her death was an accident. If someone put a gun to her head and said I'll shoot you in exchange for raising your son in the US, then you'd be justified in saying so.

Umm this doesn’t make sense. She risked her life to get to a free country and died in the process

She risked his life too, he could have very easily be the one to drown.

And she took the boy with her without his father’s knowledge.

+1, go listening to the "You're Wrong About" podcast about Elian Gonzales. She took him without telling his father, who she shared custody with.

So you have no answer.

The Florida Cuban Republicans elected to Congress have been reasonable, responsible legislators like Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who worked in good-faith. They were not delusional conspiracy theorists or evangelical culture warriors. South Florida Cubans were not Panhandle neo-Confederates, but now you vote like them. Why?

They will vote for whoever is perceived to be most anti communist. And again, most are socially coservative so the work agenda isn’t appealing either

These folks can think what they want, obviously. But I have no patience with the "communism" argument. This country is not communist or socialist. And the things that people could potentially think are these things, most if not all will eventually take part of. And in FLA, their home insurance rates are HEAVILY propped up and they have a "public option" that allows them to get coverage. How is that not "socialist"? Or is it only when it suits them?

Taxing higher and corporate incomes has always occurred, and at much higher rates than they are now. But some of you are still clinging to the incorrect belief in "trickle down" economics, which has failed time and again.

We do not have a "Single payer" health system, we have a shi---y system that sends lots of people into medical bankruptcy every year. And subpar health results. So, they'd rather die in debt than have free or low cost health care? I have relatives in two universal health care countries and, let me tell you, I'd take theirs any day.

Safety nets like social security, medicare? Where does this argument end? Subsidized food? Subsidized farming? Government funded roadwork, environmental cleanups?
