| I am 42, born in Cuba and live in Miami - AMA about the election |
Please explain Desantis and GOP's appeal to Cubans. |
| Cubans in Miami came here fleeing from a communist regime in Cuba. They had their property confiscated and have seen the country decline for decades. Anything that even smells or socialist is a no-no. Democrats screwed over the attempt to overthrow Castro at the Bay of Pigs. Democrats did nothing when Brothers to the Rescue aircraft were shot down in the 1990s. In addition, Cubans are socially conservative and for the most part, one of the higher-income immigrant groups. |
| It’s a class issue. Someone who had their property nationalized will think socialism is a very bad thing indeed. Someone who had to toil on these properties without protections may think socialism is just fine. It’s like White Russian emigres despised the revolution but factory workers who were fed rotten meat and made to work in toxic pits thought nah, let’s give red banners a chance. |
| Did you discuss the election while drinking a cafe con leche or a cortadito? |
LOL. Actually I don't drink coffee. |
Democrats ended the whole Elian Gonzalez thing as well which was very unpopular with Miami Cubans. |
| OP again. As for DeSantis, I am most grateful that he kept our business open during Covid. Many lost their businesses and life savings. He also didn't interfere with private schools reopening after a couple of months. |
OP again - yes, that too. Elian's father was a puppet of the Castro regime. |
Even a “puppet of the Castro regime” has the right to raise his own son, particularly when the mother is dead. |
I don't disagree. The flip side is that the mother gave her life to bring her son to freedom. It seems to me that many liberals/Dems view Cuba in a semi-positive light. Mostly I think because of misinformation. The idea that education is "free", that the health care system is any good, etc. Those of us who grew up there, went to school there, and still have family there know better. |
Do Cubans really think they're white? Do they realize white people don't and just use them and they don't care or what? |
I hate to pick on a dead person but no she didn't. She was hoping to make it to the US with him. Her death was an accident. If someone put a gun to her head and said I'll shoot you in exchange for raising your son in the US, then you'd be justified in saying so. |
| But Florida Cubans being Republican isn’t new. The Florida Cuban Republicans elected to Congress have been reasonable, responsible legislators like Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who worked in good-faith. They were not delusional conspiracy theorists or evangelical culture warriors. South Florida Cubans were not Panhandle neo-Confederates, but now you vote like them. Why? |
Many Cubans are white though. Direct descendants of Europeans |
