Cubans in Miami came here fleeing from a communist regime in Cuba. They had their property confiscated and have seen the country decline for decades. Anything that even smells or socialist is a no-no. Democrats screwed over the attempt to overthrow Castro at the Bay of Pigs. Democrats did nothing when Brothers to the Rescue aircraft were shot down in the 1990s. In addition, Cubans are socially conservative and for the most part, one of the higher-income immigrant groups.
Why did they not stay and fight? They seem likely cowards.
You are an idiot.
This is who the Cubans in south Florida supported but would not fight the communist to keep him in power. They are the typical “conservatives” cowards. Batista is the same as the Republican Party/conservatives/trump. This is way the Cubans support Trump and the republicans. Batista moved to Florida, returning to Cuba to run for president in 1952. Facing certain electoral defeat, he led a military coup against President Carlos Prío Socarrás that pre-empted the election. Back in power and receiving financial, military and logistical support from the United States government, Batista suspended the 1940 Constitution and revoked most political liberties, including the right to strike. He then aligned with the wealthiest landowners who owned the largest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans. Eventually it reached the point where most of the sugar industry was in U.S. hands, and foreigners owned 70% of the arable land. As such, Batista's repressive government then began to systematically profit from the exploitation of Cuba's commercial interests, by negotiating lucrative relationships both with the American Mafia, who controlled the drug, gambling, and prostitution businesses in Havana, and with large U.S.-based multinational companies who were awarded lucrative contracts. To quell the growing discontent amongst the populace—which was subsequently displayed through frequent student riots and demonstrations—Batista established tighter censorship of the media, while also utilizing his Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities secret police to carry out wide-scale violence, torture and public executions. These murders mounted in 1957, as socialist ideas became more influential. Many people were killed, with estimates ranging from hundreds to about 20,000 people killed The Cubans in south Florida are Batista thugs, apparatchiks, secret police and Mafia who lost all the money they stole and ran to Florida.
NP. Yes to all of the above. Notice the racial and economic makeup of the Cubans who left during the 1960’s through 2000’s. They were all white Cubans who benefited from the legacies of slavery or those running from Spain’s Franco.
Speaking of Franco. The James Franco/John Leguizamo Fidel Castro blow up seems relevent. For those that don't know. James Franco was cast as Castro in an upcoming movie. Leguizamo, a Colombian American who famously played a steroetypical Italian video game character, had a huge fit about a white guy playing a a famous latin american. Turns out Franco is Spanish American (hispanic?) and his family is from the exact same part of Spain as Castro's. Life is strange and the world is complicated and full of nuance. Things aren't black and white. It behooves us all to remember that.
