Cubans in Miami came here fleeing from a communist regime in Cuba. They had their property confiscated and have seen the country decline for decades. Anything that even smells or socialist is a no-no. Democrats screwed over the attempt to overthrow Castro at the Bay of Pigs. Democrats did nothing when Brothers to the Rescue aircraft were shot down in the 1990s. In addition, Cubans are socially conservative and for the most part, one of the higher-income immigrant groups.
Democrats ended the whole Elian Gonzalez thing as well which was very unpopular with Miami Cubans.
OP again - yes, that too. Elian's father was a puppet of the Castro regime.
Even a “puppet of the Castro regime” has the right to raise his own son, particularly when the mother is dead.
I don't disagree. The flip side is that the mother gave her life to bring her son to freedom. It seems to me that many liberals/Dems view Cuba in a semi-positive light. Mostly I think because of misinformation. The idea that education is "free", that the health care system is any good, etc. Those of us who grew up there, went to school there, and still have family there know better.
Do Cubans really think they're white? Do they realize white people don't and just use them and they don't care or what?
Many Cubans are white though. Direct descendants of Europeans
But in the US people use the one drop rule. White southerners don't think of Cubans as white. No matter how European they are. They are just as likely to be discriminated against as most other wealthy Latinos. Which is to say less likely than dark skinned Mexicans and Guatemalans, but more likely than people who don't speak Spanish and read as fully Americanized.
The “one drop rule” does not apply here. We are talking about people who are direct descendants of SPANIARDS. And guess what? Spain is a European country. Not all europeans are blonde/blue-eyed. Why is that so hard to understand?
Ah ah ah ah . Keep telling yourself that amigo. You're definitely not Anglo Saxon and that's more than enough for most white people to see you as an intruder.
DP. Sigh. I am a light-skinned Latina. I have some indigenous ancestry but look White. My parents have accents and have never experienced any explicit discrimination based on how they speak, or their names. I have had some people make uncomfortable comments (often White people opining on my racial identity), but nothing like the BIPOC people in my life who cannot pass as White. I don't doubt that I've experienced some discrimination that was not explicit, but to suggest that most White people see me as an intruder is absurd. Stop fixating on light-skinned Latinos. We are a minority that is not worth your energy. Most Latinos in the United States have visible Afro and indigenous features and are subject to racial discrimination on the basis of this. That doesn't mean all Latinos need to have the same political positions or are beholden to the Democratic party. I say this as someone who is a progressive Democrat.
Of course. Point being, lighter skinned Hispanics can be racist also. Anti Immigrant, even anti-Hispanic.
DP. Ugh…you just don’t get it.
