Mr. Miu — described in the complaint as “an older male” with gray hair, weighing approximately 250 pounds — was captured on video running toward a group shirtless and carrying a snorkel, according to the documents. In the video, the group can be heard telling him to “get away,” according to the documents.
According to interviews with witnesses and victims, Mr. Miu was “bothering a group of juveniles on their tubes.” Members of this group “were yelling for help from other individuals floating down the river nearby,” according to the documents.

Witnesses said that a group of people came and stood between Mr. Miu and the juveniles and told him to leave. They also said that he punched or slapped a woman in the second group who was confronting him. According to the witnesses, Mr. Miu was then punched by a man and fell into the river, documents say.

Mr. Miu then began “stabbing multiple individuals who were near him,” according to the complaint. They described the knife as having a three-inch silver blade. After the stabbing, “there was enough blood in the river that the water turned a red tint in places,” court documents say.

WOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, what do you defenders have to say for yourselves now?

I'd say you're quoting the same organization that libeled the Duke lacrosse players and the Covington Catholic kids. Had Mui been black they'd be calling him a hero fighting off white supremacists. Fact.

Oh honey, keep reaching.

Not surprising at all. Even Fox News is putting him on blast....

The posts of Nicolae Miu, 52, a mechanical engineer from Prior Lake, Minnesota, largely consist of memes that reflect a love of guns and belief in self-defense, conservative political views, deeply held religious beliefs as well as a love for animals and boating.

I will read about his trial, conviction and sentencing with snacks.

Is he an electrical or mechanical engineer?

You’ll be eating your words, so there’s that. There will absolutely be a conviction. There will be leniency in the terms of conditions, but he will serve time in jail.

The arrested 52 year old claims that the group of teenagers displayed knives during the encounter. I wonder whether this is supported by the video.

Hopefully the prosecutors will lose their jobs for going forward with this

Nope, they’re going to come back—again and again—to each and every moment where he had time to leave. They’re also going to come back to the fact that he tried to flee the scene rather than call the police and explain and ensure that the other wounded had care. They’re also going to point out that he grabbed someone’s tube before anything else started. They’re also going to make the point that he was an adult and the murdered victim was a teenager. They’re also going to make the point that the wounds inflicted were so severe that “intestines were hanging out of bodies” and “exposing internal organs,” as in defensive attack is one thing, rage mode is another.

“…the video and elapsed time shows opportunity for Nicolae to leave the confrontation.” That’s the main point. Fleeing the scene is the other damning point.

I’m not saying he’ll get the harshest possible sentence. I’m not saying the teens were innocent. But no one deserved to die, and he COULD HAVE walked away.

I’ll see you all back here when sentencing comes in.

They already pursued. What makes anyone think they wouldn't do it again?

Anyone suggesting this is a wise or recommended course of action is an idiot. Full stop.

As a former rural red state America prosecutor, I’m sickened at the charges leveled against this man. They aren’t supported by the known evidence. The state is trying to coerce him into a guilty plea to lesser charges rather than grapple with the complexity and gray in the case and enduring the ire of some of the public - as any truly good prosecutor following the mandate to ‘seek justice, not merely convictions’ should expect to every day of his or her career.

The force of nature that is a parent with a dead kid drives far too many prosecutors to doggedly pursue wrongful convictions in order to quiet the outraged victim family. Sadly in some cases, victims are victims of their own idiocy first and foremost.

These kids had ZERO reason to interact with this guy. If they didn’t like the looks of him they could have floated out of his reach, easily. Surrounding him, yelling insults and accusations, touching him - they absolutely provoked a confrontation and it is entirely within the reasonable standard for a man outnumbered 4 or 5 to 1 to muster all means available for self defense.

He’ll be acquitted.

Thank you for weighing in. You are correct on all counts.

What happened afterward sounds completely out of control on the part of everyone. Seems odd he would have a big knife with him to look for a lost cell phone. And in order to get the clip as stated was he already filming them (why??) when the attack started? It was his lawyers that made the self defense statements to the press; they’re trying to paint him in the best light possible but like everything, I’m sure there’s more to this story.

People carry pocketknives. It had a 3" blade.

Yeah, I'm sure. One of the injured was interviewed at the hospital and all she said was he seemed creepy then attacked them.

I will say, the young adults inner tubing on the Potomac can get rowdy and a bit of out of hand. I see large groups of them floating down river, with cases of beer in floating devices. They're having a good time, yelling and laughing. They're having a good time. Too loud for me, but that's my problem, not theirs.

No surprise there. Video tells all.

You leave and you call the police.

It’s like we tell our kids: you don’t fight, you don’t hit, you don’t get violent, you walk away and ask for help.

This. It is upsetting to be surrounded and called names but nothing in this self-defense story justifies stabbing several people so violently that their internal organs were hanging out and exposed. Also, he was snorkeling around, apparently looking for the phone, but grabbing on to peoples' tubes underwater. It's reasonable that such actions could be mistaken as "creepy" and, the teens may have gone overboard, but he was definitely not just out looking for a phone. Grabbing tubes and the butts that hang through them is weird.

If I'm underwater and a tube goes over my head I could be hit and/or drown. More likely he was pushing them out of the way

You people might have a leg to stand on if a *second group* totally unaffiliated with the first people who were creeped out by him had not intervened, and the dude PUNCHED A WOMAN in the second group. This guy was clearly all ready to fight, fight, fight. Welp, congrats, buddy. And also? Multiple stories from multiple news outlets said he thought the kids had the cell phone, as in he likely accused them of stealing. He was riled up and ready to go.

He will be sentenced.

Let's see the video and what documents? And where are the witnesses. I love NYT 'sources said' articles.

The video does not seem to support Miu's narrative. I wouldn't be surprised if he has no memory of what happened - it sounds like a scene out of a horror movie, not anything that would ever happen in real life. He may have blocked the memory.

But maybe he had a mental break before anything started, since it seems like, from videos, that he was acting very strangely. If any of the accounts of his words are accurate (which they may not be), then he was behaving in a very alarming way before the violence.

it's to reasonable to ask whether someone had found a phone? The teens were drunk. Their minds were altered
