Trump vs. DeSantis: who would do the most damage?

More people die in Florida, even without covid, because over a fifth of its population is over 65. It has the second oldest population in the US.

Yet its covid death heat map looks similsr to Texas, which has one of the youngest populations in the US (3rd youngest).

By comparison, Florida looks like it was spared.

Let's do more comparisons. Maine is the oldest. Vermont is number #4.

There were ways to protect seniors from covid in 2021. DeSantis chose not to employ those methods.

Cherry picking recent data? When the south has a summer covid surge? Try doing the same thing for covid deaths last few years and age adjust for age distribution of the state population. You'll find Florida has basically average/slight below average mortality after adjusting for age. Beating up on Desantis for his covid response is a loser strategy.... in fact he gains votes by pointing to it (e.g. keeping schools/businesses open despite pressure not is a talking point for him)

This is from 2021.

It works for him in Florida. It works for him among conservatives. If he runs for the WH, will that talking point work nationally? We will see.

The folks I know who live abroad are looking in to what is happening in the US in disbelief and fear. It’s like watching a train wreck that’s going to impact the whole world. The denial of some that “it’s not that bad” is the scariest part. How many people have been conned. And Democrats won’t save us-the ones in power benefit from the status quo.

Ok, fair enough - not including before that time isn't a good comparison. And not age adjusting it doesn't make sense given Florida has a lot of older people. Florida comes out as basically average when you do this. Not saying Desantis couldn't have better... but attacking him for covid response is not a winning strategy. Heck... most people I know admire Florida's "guts" for doing what they did, since there wasn't an obvious worse outcome as a result

+1 million

I'm beginning to agree with this, the more I see of him.

+100
Love DeSantis!!!!

What you folks don't realize is that after you vote these people into power and they change the laws, push the interpretation of the laws to the absolute limit, line their pockets, and pack the courts, etc. to stay in power is that you become as powerless as all the people you want them to stick it to to vote them out.

Agreeing with someone politically doesn't mean you want to "stick it" to anyone. Do you want to "stick it" to people you disagree with?
DP

I love this. It's just a political "disagreement" when you're picking and choosing the news outlets that cover your official government actions, or when you enact laws against gays. This isn't a political disagreement. It's a fundamental disagreement about how society should function. I'm against fascism, light or heavy, but you do you.

And my point still stands - once you vote these people into power you won't be able to vote them out.

Campaign activities are not "official government actions." Reasonable people can disagree about the propriety of not allowing left leaning media into campaign events, but it is well within DeSantis's rights. People no longer trust the media to accurately report, so it's hard to take the media's side on this.

But signing bills into law is, and that's what DeSantis did. Try again.

Why? NY and NJ and others did very poorly when little was known about the virus and there were no vaccines. Florida did terribly in the summer of 2021, when vaccines were plentiful and we knew that masking correctly was very effective.

But I agree that the American people as a whole likely won't care, especially by 2024.

Florida lost 77,000 people. That's awful. Considering how many were lost in 2021, it didn't have to be nearly that bad. But I don't think that number is likely to hurt him politically.

This is total BULLSHIT.
DeSantis did indeed protect the seniors. You are confusing him with Cuomo (NY), Murphy (NJ), Wolf (PA), and Whitmer (MI), all of whom placed COVID + patients in nursing homes.
DeSantis did just the opposite. He ensured nursing homes were the first to get PPE and protected them as well as we knew how at the time.

I trust DeSantis more on the world stage than Trump. Trump was a useful idiot for Putin. I feel like DeSantis is way less of a liability.

You are confusing 2020 (when the northeast was hit with covid before Florida was and little was known about the virus) with 2021 (when a lot more was known about masking and vaccines were plentiful).

In 2021, DeSantis let more of his constituents die (per capita) than almost every other governor.

According to data compiled by the New York Times, Florida — the third largest state — has the third most COVID-19 deaths and cases in the nation, with more than 3.6 million cases and more than 59,000 deaths since February 2020. When adjusted for population, Florida’s COVID-19 death rate also ranks 10th among the 50 states, with 278 deaths per 100,000 people.

Exactly. (Most) people aren’t stupid.

Most people recognize that covid in 2020 was a different story than covid in 2021.
