According to my neighbor, who is a teacher, because of the weird way the days off fell that week, tons of teachers requested the whole week off.

Yes, but the were told they couldn’t have those two days off (3rd and 5th.) Why leave was granted I have no idea, it wasn’t supposed to be.

No. We recently got an email that so many people had already requested those days AND subs wouldn’t pick them up that *new* leave requests for those dates wouldn’t be approved. But ultimately they couldn’t staff it. Subs don’t work high volume days either. And you actually can’t just deny everyone leave. It’s a benefit of your job.

Eh, I think the teachers ultimately screwed themselves here. It will just become harder and harder in the future. My friend who teaches in HS said a bunch of his coworkers deliberately took leave AFTER the email as a F-U to admin. Very mature.

I highly doubt that. We don’t want to screw our coworkers or building admin.

Well, after this I doubt they will be making it easier to take leave.

Leave is not a thing employers really get to deny. If I am going on leave, with days I have banked, I am telling my employer, not asking. And when they don’t have staffing as it is, neither licensed staff nor subs, you really think they can fire people for taking off some Friday that is inconvenient? All employees have to do at that point is wake up “sick” which is even more inconvenient for schools than planning for a known absence a few weeks ahead. I swear some of y’all aspire to live in a society where we are all beholden to and controlled by our jobs. THEY NEED US and you do not have to work yourself into the ground absolutely never using your leave, which is a BENEFIT OF YOUR JOB, because they don’t like it.

You seem like you have never had any other type of job. LOTS of companies deny leave if too many people try to take the same days. There is no rule they have to allow the leave. You are obviously free to leave.

Lol. Yes, we are. You seem to be perfectly fine with your life being dictated by your employer though so you enjoy that.

1 is a teacher work day for end of quarter planning and grades
2 is Election Day, always off
4 is Diwali

Don’t forget Friday 10/29 which is ALSO off!

This is not new. LCPS has ALWAYS, ALWAYS has the Friday the quarter ends for PD and the Monday after the quarter ends for grades and conferences. Literally always. You are in all actuality very upset only about 2 new days, the 3rd and 5th. The others would always have been off in any other year. And the issue of having the 3rd and the 5th be in person isn’t even on teachers taking those days - it’s that the subs won’t pick those days up. If there’s coverage, teachers being out is a non issue. There is no coverage though because we are low on subs and the ones we have won’t pick up the inconvenient days. We also are low on bus drivers. When you don’t have the appropriate number of staff, no day will be “acceptable” to take leave but there wasn’t anything inherently wrong with teachers taking the 3/5 and why Ziegler didn’t have to mention it until last week when they realized SUBS wouldn’t cover.

Wrong. I guess I’ve been in Loudoun longer than you have. It issued to just be a 4 day weekend, with the Monday and Tuesday off. The PD day is new in in the last 5 years or so.

Here’s and old calendar, just the two days.

Oooh one more day, you’re right, how devastating. It STILL wouldn’t be an issue if they had had subs. They don’t. This isn’t about the calendar at all. It is about the fact nobody wants to do this job anymore and we don’t have the staff. If we had enough subs we wouldn’t be in this position. Do I blame them for not wanting to sub? No. Nobody wants to. But making 2 days asynchronous is not the end of the world. It’s really not.

The difference between the kids going to school that Friday and not is negligible. I’d be perfectly fine if they took away stupid PD and put that day back in the calendar but are we seriously acting like that stray Friday was going to make or break any academic progress? Come on. End of quarter, no new work, Friday before long weekend- it was a wash either way.

You teachers are so lazy and obvious. If you don’t see the difference between a 4 day weekend like it used to be and the 10 day break we have now, you need to go back to Kindergarten.

This isn’t a “10day break.” 4 of those are WEEKEND days. One is a holiday, Diwali. So now you’re down to 5. 2 of them were always work days. So now it’s 3. One is PD. Staff don’t want that either but oh well. The other 2- asynchronous days and we have to post work. Not holidays.

I was a teacher before constant training was offered/required. I don't understand the need for so much training. My opinion: it is to justify all the people who work in higher headquarters. They have to justify their existence.

Is it really worth the expense and disruption?

X 1000.

As a sub, I agree. 99% of my subbing is for training, not teacher absences. As a parent, I find it appalling the kids miss so much instructional time. The subs don’t actually teach (I would, but that is not the plans I am given.)

The only time I will teach is if the teacher knew I was going to be there way ahead of time.

I’m the PP and the teachers know I will be there weeks ahead of time. They still don’t leave actual material for me to teach. The students work on projects, or do reading comp, or write stories or whatever. I’m definitely not teaching any new content, even though I’d be more than happy to.

I never leave new content for a sub anymore. When came back, I just had to reteach it - I’d rather them review, write, etc.

That's not how leave works in jobs where people have to cover for you. Do you think nurses and doctors are all taking off wherever they feel like it or is there a level of coordination so that the hospital can still run?

The idea that you can just take leave whenever regardless of the impact is such entitled behavior coming from the adults that we can't expect the kids to be any better.

But the asynchronous days were caused by you a-holes. It will be very interesting to see what happens with the proposed calendars next year. I will be very surprised if they let this happen again. But then again, they suck too so you never know.

So you’re an a-hole whenever you take a day off work? You just gunning to spend your entire life working?
