LCPS School closed for a week

LCPS will be closed for a week in the first week of November because of a "sub shortage" What are your thoughts?

What is going on that week that they need so many subs?

I just feel so defeated by all these days off. Dh and I don’t know how to cover two additional days off that week with such short notice. We asked this morning at my younger sons daycare but they were full and not doing a camp that week.

It’s like public schools think we’re all trust fund babies who don’t work. The 2:30 dismissal also drives me crazy too.

My thoughts are that they need to raise the wage for subs.

November 1/2/4 are already holidays. Guessing staff requested off the 3/5 to make it a full week just like all the students probably did.

Yup. By a lot.

If you can afford to pay for additional daycare or a camp, then you can afford to pay a junior high or high school student to babysit your kids for those days.

These days should've been days off from the outset. It was absurd to have no school Monday, Tuesday and Thursday but expect people to show up Wednesday and Friday. Now parents are scrambling for last minute childcare.

It is an asynchronous learning days for all students. I have a high school student but she will not be babysitting for our neighbors that day as her teachers plan to assign work/projects through Schoology.
I feel bad for parents of younger students as it create care issues that would have easily been solved if they had provided the calendar with a full week off for students when the calendar was first considered.
I honesly thought is was crazy to have two days of school that week and to also not have them be consecutive days. This was very poor planning on the part of the school Board and school administrators.

In every school system where I have taught, that’s not allowed. You can’t take off the day before a long weekend or other day of no school.

Do these calendar makers have no sense at all? Who could have not seen this coming?

My only thought was the schedule for that week was completely ridiculous, so I'm not really surprised.

I did chuckle at the designation of Wednesday and Friday as "asynchronous" days, however. I suspect that means they intend to actually count them as school days or something for state purposes?

Yes, they do.
I have a Kondergartener in LCPS and thought this schedule was absurd when I saw it over the summer. Why on earth would they expect to have holidays on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, but not the full week? Plus, they are off the Friday before (10/29). Crazy.
So, now we get to scramble for childcare on short notice for those 2 days. Thanks.

Awesome 6 days off in a row. My boss will be thrilled at the last minute notice.
