LCPS (and Arlington) add those 4 new holidays after FCPS proposed to do it first. They had already approved their calendars when FCPS changed its mind

As a sub, I agree. 99% of my subbing is for training, not teacher absences. As a parent, I find it appalling the kids miss so much instructional time. The subs don’t actually teach (I would, but that is not the plans I am given.)

The only time I will teach is if the teacher knew I was going to be there way ahead of time.

I’m the PP and the teachers know I will be there weeks ahead of time. They still don’t leave actual material for me to teach. The students work on projects, or do reading comp, or write stories or whatever. I’m definitely not teaching any new content, even though I’d be more than happy to.

Surely you understand that we know that
A) kids won’t listen to your teaching. They do not view you as a teacher and won’t learn
B) we have no way of ensuring how you will teach or if it will be correct. We don’t want to undo or confuse kids if you teach it completely different than we would
C) we are subject matter experts in our content. Subs can just have any college degree, that doesn’t mean they know what we know about our specific content

It's a benefit of the job but that doesn't mean everyone gets to take the day/s they want. It's standard practice to have to request it off and if too many people request the same day then some don't get leave that day.

Just another LCPS fail.

Leave is not a thing employers really get to deny. If I am going on leave, with days I have banked, I am telling my employer, not asking. And when they don’t have staffing as it is, neither licensed staff nor subs, you really think they can fire people for taking off some Friday that is inconvenient? All employees have to do at that point is wake up “sick” which is even more inconvenient for schools than planning for a known absence a few weeks ahead. I swear some of y’all aspire to live in a society where we are all beholden to and controlled by our jobs. THEY NEED US and you do not have to work yourself into the ground absolutely never using your leave, which is a BENEFIT OF YOUR JOB, because they don’t like it.

November 1/2/4 are already holidays. Guessing staff requested off the 3/5 to make it a full week just like all the students probably did.

In every school system where I have taught, that’s not allowed. You can’t take off the day before a long weekend or other day of no school.

In my system, you can take the day off, but then you are not paid for the holiday. At least that’s been the claim. I’m not sure it’s the actual practice as I’ve been on medical leave surrounding a holiday before and was paid for the holiday.

You seem like you have never had any other type of job. LOTS of companies deny leave if too many people try to take the same days. There is no rule they have to allow the leave. You are obviously free to leave.

2 is Election Day, always off
