No. We recently got an email that so many people had already requested those days AND subs wouldn’t pick them up that *new* leave requests for those dates wouldn’t be approved. But ultimately they couldn’t staff it. Subs don’t work high volume days either. And you actually can’t just deny everyone leave. It’s a benefit of your job. |
Surely you understand that we know that A) kids won’t listen to your teaching. They do not view you as a teacher and won’t learn B) we have no way of ensuring how you will teach or if it will be correct. We don’t want to undo or confuse kids if you teach it completely different than we would C) we are subject matter experts in our content. Subs can just have any college degree, that doesn’t mean they know what we know about our specific content |
Eh, I think the teachers ultimately screwed themselves here. It will just become harder and harder in the future. My friend who teaches in HS said a bunch of his coworkers deliberately took leave AFTER the email as a F-U to admin. Very mature. |

Leave is not a thing employers really get to deny. If I am going on leave, with days I have banked, I am telling my employer, not asking. And when they don’t have staffing as it is, neither licensed staff nor subs, you really think they can fire people for taking off some Friday that is inconvenient? All employees have to do at that point is wake up “sick” which is even more inconvenient for schools than planning for a known absence a few weeks ahead. I swear some of y’all aspire to live in a society where we are all beholden to and controlled by our jobs. THEY NEED US and you do not have to work yourself into the ground absolutely never using your leave, which is a BENEFIT OF YOUR JOB, because they don’t like it. |
In my system, you can take the day off, but then you are not paid for the holiday. At least that’s been the claim. I’m not sure it’s the actual practice as I’ve been on medical leave surrounding a holiday before and was paid for the holiday. |
You seem like you have never had any other type of job. LOTS of companies deny leave if too many people try to take the same days. There is no rule they have to allow the leave. You are obviously free to leave. |
What holidays are on the 1/2/4 ? ( moco parent who’s kid is not off) |
1 is a teacher work day for end of quarter planning and grades 2 is Election Day, always off 4 is Diwali |
