LCPS School closed for a week

We don’t whine or stomp our feet or tell our bosses “it’s our leave and we’ll do what we want!” We have 40+ other weeks a year we can take off. This isn’t that hard people.

But that’s not how it should be. For any of us. You really think it’s normal or ok that for a whole quarter filled with holidays employees not only don’t take time off to rest and celebrate but WORK HARDER to make a company money you will never see? You really think that company would collapse if you weren’t there December 22-24? Covid has really laid bare how much some of you have built your identity around some goofy sense of honor of working yourselves into the ground for n o t h i n g.

This kind of attitude is why China is going to win. I'm really hoping the folks who are, for example, monitoring the hypersonic missile coming over the South Pole don't just decide to take leave because they're owed it.

I really think these posters who are insisting all leave must be taken whenever they want must just push papers around all day.

JFC. Teachers are not "monitoring missiles" and neither are employees "in finance."

Is it hard going through life being that profoundly dim?

Yes, but the were told they couldn’t have those two days off (3rd and 5th.) Why leave was granted I have no idea, it wasn’t supposed to be.

No. We recently got an email that so many people had already requested those days AND subs wouldn’t pick them up that *new* leave requests for those dates wouldn’t be approved. But ultimately they couldn’t staff it. Subs don’t work high volume days either. And you actually can’t just deny everyone leave. It’s a benefit of your job.

Eh, I think the teachers ultimately screwed themselves here. It will just become harder and harder in the future. My friend who teaches in HS said a bunch of his coworkers deliberately took leave AFTER the email as a F-U to admin. Very mature.

It’s our leave, we can do whatever we want with it.

That's not how leave works in jobs where people have to cover for you. Do you think nurses and doctors are all taking off wherever they feel like it or is there a level of coordination so that the hospital can still run?

The idea that you can just take leave whenever regardless of the impact is such entitled behavior coming from the adults that we can't expect the kids to be any better.

+1
This. Imagine government agencies in public facing roles just shut down like LCPS now has to do. For example, I work for the federal government and my leave is restricted the days before and after major holidays. My supervisor can say no to my leave request if there won't be enough staff left to cover.

This is why schools have SUBSTITUTES.

Not nearly enough for any teacher to “take leave whenever they want.” You know this and are being deliberately obtuse.

Well, that's administration's staffing problem, not the teachers.'

Exactly, one of the few jobs where they even have backups and the schools can't get it together. Seems like anyone can be a teacher or a sub. No one can do my job - if I'm off, people need to wait until I get back.

Also, complaining about teachers and their leave - they have an ENTIRE SUMMER (since you like all caps) of leave.

Summers are not "leave," but then, you already knew that.

Agreed, but you certainly seem to be gloating about it, aren't you.
Meanwhile, some parents have been thrown into a lurch trying to cover childcare...admin doesn't seem to care about them, either.

Maybe teachers, like all other jobs, should learn that you work or you lose your job.

Awwe, you're so cute. I can just see you there with your impotent balled up.little fists of rage. "Your kid" and their legally compulsory attendance in public school is totally irrelevant.

No, sweetie, "we" can't fire them, because "we" are not their employers (no, your pittance of property tax earmarked directly for public education in no way makes you their employer).

You’re right. We take it and enjoy it. File a lawsuit.

DP. I just do understand why you post things like this? This is how the teaching profession appears to parents and then we are chided when we are concerned about the impact of teacher absences. You want respect, but sound unprofessional.

DP. Look to the root of the absences and try to address that.

Root:
Teachers are burned out. They have a life.

Solution:
Pay more for subs to cover teachers and give teachers more PTO. Teachers are happier. Kids have better quality subs. It's a better outcome for everyone.

Sorry, I don't agree. Well, I agree with part of what you are saying which is that we need more support for teachers to prevent burnout, which should include the availability of qualified subs who are not simply babysitting during teacher absences. If there's not a qualified person available to step in to teach the class in a way that the kids don't suffer, then it's unprofessional to use sick leave for family vacations.

That's the way it works in other professions too. The mere existence of leave does not mean that you can take it whether you want to regardless of the consequences for your employer or client/customers, etc.

That's your opinion. Cool story.

Public school is not responsible for providing you daily childcare. I know you HATE when people state this fact and it sends you into a tantrum death spiral, but it is indeed true.

You're right, they are supposed to provide an education. But DH and I work full time and have a Kindergartener, so, when she isnt in school, we have to make childcare arrangements.
See how that works, or are you really that dense?

Yeah, well, I am not a SAHM, so when my child isn’t in school, I have to either take off or find alternate childcare. Fine when there is illness or snow days involved, but when it is due to leave policies and poor planning, that’s a different story.
Or should I just leave my 6yo home alone? Like it or not, working parents expect their children to be in school and, yes, school is a form of non-parental supervision.

I come from a family of teachers. I'm not enraged at teachers - I know all too well what they deal with on a daily basis. I'm angry with the administration that allowed this to happen, and will likely not prevent it going forward.
You certainly are a nasty piece of work, though. Do you even care about your students at all, or are you just into it for the summer vacations?

Meanwhile, some parents have been thrown into a lurch trying to cover childcare...admin doesn't seem to care about them, either.

Public school is not responsible for providing you daily childcare. I know you HATE when people state this fact and it sends you into a tantrum death spiral, but it is indeed true.

Too bad. Don’t have these phony expectations “because you have to work”. Next time wear a condom if you’re going to be this enraged about teachers enjoying their lives.

I care about my students. But you’re delusional like the vast majority of people. I care more about my mental health, my own children and my sanity. It’s a job. Nothing more nothing less.

Say it louder for the dimwits in the back.
