They shouldn't have to. They are a sovereign nation, they should have the freedom to whatever alliances they like.

BUT... If they were to agree to declare they have no intention to join NATO any time soon, they should put significant conditions on Russia in exchange for doing so.

Ukraine should demand that Russia declare the eastern rebellion come to an end, announce it returns under Ukraine control, they completely withdraw, stop supporting and funding it. And also put Russia on notice that the second that Russia tries to oppress or threaten Ukraine's sovereignty again, the deal is off the table and Ukraine's NATO membership gets immediately submitted.

Its pretty useless given the lay of land to Sign an agreement similar to the useless and defunct Budapest memorandum or Minsk agreements. Ukraine has set the course for nato in its constitution. Putting it off will just result in more land grab. It’s joining the nato that can actually stave off further agression. I am sorry but the bolded is just naive.

Because Putin knows he’s going to face strong resistance. He likes war and destruction. He thrives on it. So he waits until there’s someone in the White House who will fight him. Trump was a pushover. There was no challenge there for him. That’s why he didn’t make a move then.

More importantly, Putin was waiting for Merkel to leave office. Scholz hasn't rolled over yet. Let's see what happens after he meets with Putin tomorrow.

My gosh. Y'all still don't get it. Ukraine will never get NATO membership unless it is willing to go to war with Russia. Ukraine's NATO membership is the red line for Russia. Putin clearly stated that.
Russia will leave troops at the border to make sure that never happens.

That will never happen unless NATO is willing to go to war with Russia

Meanwhile, Putin is really, really scared of getting Covid. This is his (staged) meeting with Foreign Minister Lavrov today

Unless it's willing to go to war with Russia? You seem to be missing historical context.
Ukraine is already ready to go to war with Russia. They have already been fighting a war with Russia in Donetsk and Luhansk since 2014.

I love how we dropped bombs on people during the Syrian conflict and usually have no qualms inserting ourselves in military conflicts but when it comes to Ukraine being invaded by Russia, we're just like "here are some supplies and weapons, good luck fam." Without military aid, Ukraine has no chance of holding off Russia. We're basically abandoning them to be annexed. And for what? To avoid war with Russia? "Peace in Our Time" 2.0.

No, NATO will not go to war for Ukraine. It will go to war for Poland, Romania and the Baltics though. It will impose massive sanctions for Ukraine

That was answering whether Ukraine is willing to go to war with Russia. Ukraine obviously is. Whether NATO is remains to be seen. I can easily see this spilling over and affecting NATO member nations.
