Star Wars discussion WITH SPOILERS!!

This thread is for the discussion of Star Wars: The Force Awakens WITH SPOILERS. If you have not seen the movie and don't want to be spoiled, STOP READING NOW!

Ahem.

So who is Rey? I say it's Kylo Ren's twin sister. DH thinks she's Luke's daughter. What says DCUM?

(Okay, that's not really a spoiler, more of a speculation, but anyway...)

And who is this Supreme Commander guy and where did he come from? It wasn't really explained.

And why does he look like a float in a bizarro version of Macy's Thanksgiving parade?

Wouldn't Leia know if she had had twins?

I think that Rey is probably Luke's daughter. If she is a mystery daughter of Leia and Han's, it would be a shame to have the big revelation after Han's death.

I think both Han and Leia know who Rey is. My money is that she's Luke's daughter, not Han and Leia.

Just too much symmetry - Han offered Luke a 'job' back in the day, does it again with Rey. She had pretty mad natural piloting skills. And the flashback to whatever ugliness happened involving Luke and the young Jedi trainees (when Ben becomes Kylo).

She's Luke's or she's a young jedi that got spirited away that's not Luke's - but if she's Luke's - who the hell is the mother? Jedis aren't supposed to have entanglements (that's how you end up becoming Darth Vader). And if she's Luke's then she's Han and Leia's niece - which explains the fond hug when she returned from battle and his giving her a job and treating her like family almost upon meeting her.

Luke's daughter. Han and Leia didn't have any reason to take their daughter to a slave planet and then raise their son to be a Jedi. Of course, I can't imagine why Luke's daughter would be on a slave planet either.

Luke's daughter for sure. I base this on the lightsaber discussion of it being Darth Vader's then Luke's and now it goes to her.

Wasn't Adam Driver's hair magnificent in this? I think he's wonderful.

I really like him as an actor. DH was bothered by the fact that he doesn't look anything like either Han or Leia, though!

I think Han definitely knows, based on the scene where that weird glasses lady (I forget her name) said to him, "So who's the girl?" and then they cut away.

I suppose we have to wait until episode eight to figure out who Ray is. OK that said, how did you feel about the complete parallel copy of episode four? This Star Wars was simply episode four on steroids.

To me those parallels felt more like homages, than out right copies, if you see what I mean. It was exciting to see Hans Solo (the father) walk out onto that bridge with a Vader-esque character who was also his "son". There was something thrilling about it all.

Here is a great article talking about the political stuff they mentioned, but didn't go into too much detail about. If you are confused about the Republic, Resistance and First Order, read this...

I'm votIng against her being Luke's daughter--first because he's supposed to be the ascetic monk, and second because it is just waaaaay too cruel to leave his daughter on Jackoo. My guess is that she was a young Jedi being trained by Luke and showed a lot of talent; when the other Jedi trainees were killed, Ben/Ren did not have the heart to kill her, and so relocated her to a place where she was unlikely to turn into a problem. I think the light saber could have just been calling to her because she is so strong in the force.Does either of your kid have an interest in babysitting this weekend? We were thinking of trying to catch a 10:00 movie Saturday, or maybe something Sunday evening. Bed and breakfast available to anyone that wants it!
Wasn't clear to me if Han/leia definitely realized that the fact that she was on Jackoo was significant, but the wise old lady seemed to indicate that the girl's parents were dead, which would seem cruel of the parents were Han and leia. I think Han was just reaching out to her as a kindred spirit, and the child he wished he had.
I was somewhat disappointed in: (1) what seemed a lack of any real connection between Han and his son. I'm hoping (probably futile) that they at least bring Han back for flashbacks in the next one, as I thought he was the best part of this movie and I'd like to see more of the father-son thing; (2) the fact that Leia does not appear to be a Jedi. Wasn't it said at the end of return of the Jedi that "there is another" meaning leia? Why didn't she get the force too? (3) Han and leia are basically divorced. I mean, if they can't make it, what hope dO the rest of us have?

It seems like they almost have to. They barely explained the backstory, so I feel like episode 8 will have to fill in the gaps.
