My guess is that she was a young Jedi being trained by Luke and showed a lot of talent; when the other Jedi trainees were killed, Ben/Ren did not have the heart to kill her, and so relocated her to a place where she was unlikely to turn into a problem. I think the light saber could have just been calling to her because she is so strong in the force.Does either of your kid have an interest in babysitting this weekend? We were thinking of trying to catch a 10:00 movie Saturday, or maybe something Sunday evening. Bed and breakfast available to anyone that wants it!
Wasn't clear to me if Han/leia definitely realized that the fact that she was on Jackoo was significant, but the wise old lady seemed to indicate that the girl's parents were dead, which would seem cruel of the parents were Han and leia. I think Han was just reaching out to her as a kindred spirit, and the child he wished he had.
I was somewhat disappointed in: (1) what seemed a lack of any real connection between Han and his son. I'm hoping (probably futile) that they at least bring Han back for flashbacks in the next one, as I thought he was the best part of this movie and I'd like to see more of the father-son thing; (2) the fact that Leia does not appear to be a Jedi. Wasn't it said at the end of return of the Jedi that "there is another" meaning leia? Why didn't she get the force too? (3) Han and leia are basically divorced. I mean, if they can't make it, what hope dO the rest of us have?

Lei has the force, in episode VI or VII she is in the millennium falcolm and hears Luke's voice calling her, she can sense Luke needs her help, and she convinces Han to go back and save Luke (he's hanging by one hand off the death star or something).

My husband remembered and showed me on youtube there is a Force Awakens trailer teaser that hasn't received much attention but holds some clues. It doesn't show Luke, but it is definitely him speaking, and he says something like "the force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. and you have it." So to whom is he speaking? This dialogue wasn't in the current movie. Is he speaking to Rey or Ren????

I really like him as an actor. DH was bothered by the fact that he doesn't look anything like either Han or Leia, though!

What also bothered me was that he had a British accent and they did not.

So I'm the only one who thinks that Ray might be Ben's daughter? Given the parallels with Episode 4, the young pilot with no family on the desert planet who's good with technology is the bad guy's offspring.

Was anyone else struck by how the intro to the Force Awakens just assumes stuff we definitely did not know at the end of Return of the Jedi -- like General Leia and "her brother Luke." Who told them? They certainly didn't know, and yoda didn't tell them when he was alive, nor did Obi Wan obviously. Did they watch the prequels too?

Ahem.

So who is Rey? I say it's Kylo Ren's twin sister. DH thinks she's Luke's daughter. What says DCUM?

(Okay, that's not really a spoiler, more of a speculation, but anyway...)

And who is this Supreme Commander guy and where did he come from? It wasn't really explained.

I appear to be the only other person who think they're twins also. My kids think Rey is Luke's daughter. They made me read them some crappy Star Wars book where leia and Han had twins, so maybe that's where I'm getting that? No idea if it was an actual sanctioned book of just the crap they make me read them to torture me

I think the crappy books are fan fiction that evolved in the decades since the original was published - the director making the new movie didn't use them as the plot but there apparently are some parallels.

I vote that Rey is Luke's daughter, and he left her on Jakko after Ben/Ren went bad as a means of protecting her.

BTW, PP, this is my favorite line of all the reviews I've read about the new movie!
(3) Han and leia are basically divorced. I mean, if they can't make it, what hope dO the rest of us have?

It may have some meaning, or it could just be a callback. The line is from what, Jedi? The end of Empire? When Luke tells Leia she is his sister, that is what he says.

Thank you so much for this thread !!! I saw late last week and there is only so much I can discuss with DH. He can't get over Han's death, or the fact that the new bad lord character reminds him of Gollum. (I pointed out that it's common for villains to be old and shriveled)

Pp, well spotted for the quote to be from episode 5 or 6.

Could Rey be Obi-wan's daughter? Or did someone here say that Jedis can't have romantic relationships?

As for Adam driver, I was disappointed that Kylo/Ben is not as handsome as his dad.

Is Princess Leia now a queen and a general?

You don't actually watch movies do you.

She is just a general.hard to be Princess or Queen of anything anymore when your planet was destroyed by the Empire.

Unless Ben's ghost was getting it on with someone, there is no way Rey is Ben's daughter. Granddaughter, maybe.

And yes, we most certainly did know that Luke and Leia were twins. This was a major plot point of Return of the Jedi.

Technically, it is Gollum. Aka Andy Serkis.

I didn't notice him having an accent but if he did, he is clearly emulating the other dark side people. He doesn't belong with them, but tries everything to fit in.
