What is a "Felony Conference"? Thanks.

It's essentially a status update meeting between the judge and attorneys to understand (big picture) what is happening in the case, and to decide on next steps, timetable, etc. You will often see a date for when the case will go to a grand jury after the felony status conference.

If you want to track the very basic outline of the flow of the case, use this link:

http://www.dccourts.gov/internet/CCO.jsf

Click on "Search cases" on the right side of the page, you then put in the basic info (name or organization), and the system will find matching cases. I served on a DC Superior Court jury and used this after the trial was over to see what the eventual sentence was. It was also interesting because I saw records of meeting and hearings that were going during the trial that the jury didn't know about at the time because you aren't supposed to read about the case or do things like check this website while you are on a jury.

As a parent who had a child in the offender's class-- in fact in the class when he was committing the offense to which he confessed-- I suggest that until you've had your child ask you "how do I know who I'm supposed to trust anymore" you stop ascribing petty, middle school behavior to another parent who has had to answer that question. I would love the luxury of being bored instead of worried sick that my child witnessed something and is suppressing it. I would love for this to be abstract enough that I could consider this person "likable." This is someone who was in contact with my child daily for ten months, during which he was sexually abusing a child in the same room.

This school is our community. It is where my child has grown from ages 5-11, where we've made friends, where we've seen wonderful children develop and learn and be blessed with mostly phenomenal teachers, and where I sincerely hoped my child would not have to learn that sometimes trusted adults do despicable things to little kids. The school has handled this pretty well other than the initial failure to communicate, and the teachers did a great job in particular of moving forward in quite unfamiliar territory knowing both students and parents were in shock. Calling this criminal what he is does not equal criticizing the school. However, because of what this awful person did, the school is the scene of the worst thing that has happened to anyone my child knows. That can't change. He did that.

I can't get my head around the idea that anyone who has confessed to touching students in his own classroom and sending pictures to a 10-year-old is "likable" by any definition, or that anyone behind bars for child sexual abuse could be "brought down." There's not a whole lot of real estate below where he is.

Let's all pray together that there are no more victims. Unfortunately that is unlikely. Fortunately he'll never be able to hurt another student.

Well said. Thank you. It seems the poster you responded to, may be battling his own demons.

Oh unclench already and focus on your own family and life.

You keep telling people to focus on their own family, but if you followed your own advice, what are you doing here?

Status update of GP's court case online says the case is closed. But it also says "full report and sentencing" pending date set for 9/4, and no bond set. Plead guilty to counts 1 and 2.

A bit confusing.

Could mean a plea bargain, which is how the overwhelming majority of criminal cases are resolved and which is particularly likely when the offender confessed, as he did.

Maximum penalty for his offense is 10 years per count. I'm guessing he'll get less for sparing the taxpayers the expense of a trial.

Yes, plea bargain, based on these articles:

http://wtop.com/dc/2015/06/d-c-teacher-pleads-guilty-sexual-assault-student/

http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/29417579/teacher-sex-abuse

Nothing from the Post, as far as I can tell.

The article says "he could remain in jail until sentencing on September 4". What does it mean? Will he get then transferred to another jail?

Sorry, I am not a lawyer (obviously), so I am a bit confuse with the statement.

Responding to a thread.

Certainly not here trying to drag out the ordeal or re-victimize people.

Maybe they're waiting for the weekend to report the updated facts of this crime.

Just heard the case mentioned on WTOP. Pena may get up to 10 years. As part of the plea deal, he can not be charged with earlier crimes.

Now we know why other victims have not bothered to come forward.

So much for this being an isolated incident...

A bit confused here. Does it mean that if another child comes forward his crime would be unpunished due to the plea agreement? HoW could it be?

Yep. That's exactly what it sounds like. God only knows how many other children he molested. He must have some pretty good lawyers who knew what to demand to minimize Pena's years in prison.
