Oyster-Adam teacher arrested

I wish DCPS could have at least put out a statement before kids got to school. Many will be upset and very confused. If parents had known, we could have prepared our children at least somewhat. There were parents crying on the sidewalks when they found out. Many are close friends with him and were in complete shock.

The principal made a huge mistake in not communicating with us about this before school.

I imagine that they're lawyering up, clarifying the scope of the situation, and creating a plan, but the lack of communication with parents is inexcuseable. Why were parents finding out first from the news. I would be livid.

He's gay, right?

I haven't seen anything about the facts yet, it's not even clear if the victim was a student.

It is clear. Please stop trying to protect the criminals.

Horrible. I am sending good thoughts and prayers to the family whose child was harmed.

What you apparently don't understand is, by the time the police are actually arresting someone, 99% of the time there is MORE THAN ENOUGH evidence to arrest. The truly sad thing is how much evidence it usually takes to get law enforcement to actually act. I worked in this field in a past career and it is shocking how obvious the abuse can be (once it's been discovered and children have been interviewed) and yet without damning evidence like video or pics it's shocking how much it can take to get law enforcement to act.

By the time someone is actually being arrested, especially someone like this, it's dramatically likely it's true. Also likely that only the tip of the iceberg is known. I've seen cases move forward where so many of the victims' allegations werent' even included, for various reasons.

That is such a damn shame, pp. In my one experience, an arrest was made within a week based solely on the word of a 3 year old. I have to assume it's because the victim was from an upper middle class family and the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant. I tell this story because it shows that there is actually nothing bureaucratic about the issues pp notes. Pp do you think it's some sort of bias/denial that we face when someone we are *supposed* to trust does this.

What constitutes 2nd degree charge?

Most likely 2(A) in this case.

§ 22–3003. Second degree sexual abuse.

A person shall be imprisoned for not more than 20 years and may be fined not more than the amount set forth in § 22?3571.01, if that person engages in or causes another person to engage in or submit to a sexual act in the following manner:

(1) By threatening or placing that other person in reasonable fear (other than by threatening or placing that other person in reasonable fear that any person will be subjected to death, bodily injury, or kidnapping); or

(2) Where the person knows or has reason to know that the other person is:

(A) Incapable of appraising the nature of the conduct;

(B) Incapable of declining participation in that sexual act; or

(C) Incapable of communicating unwillingness to engage in that sexual act.

Principals are on call pretty much 24 hours a day. DCPS gave a standard statement to the media.

Would it have been so hard to send the same thing to parents who weren't up watching the 11pm news?

"The safety of our students is a top priority," a statement from the school system said. "As soon as we became aware of this situation, we acted promptly to remove the teacher from the school and fully cooperate with MPD in this investigation." That would've been enough for me.

They could have added more reassuring stuff like "Counselling staff will be helping kids who have concerns at school. We'll send home information on how to deal with these situations. You will be notified of any further developments."

How hard was that? Jeez

Lack of communication has been a big complaint of the new principal. Maybe this was a rookie mistake.

+1 Kaya or someone from DCPS was up last night to inform O-A principal about this.

It makes you feel better to think there is a something you'd notice about a sex offender to protect your child, but having worked with them. There isnt. The horrifying thing is...they can seem just like normal people on the outside.

This. If it was easy to spot a sex offender it would be a lot easier to keep kids safe.

+100. Child molesters often work VERY hard to remain above suspicion. That's why their crimes often go unreported for years (and sometimes forever). For examples, please see Dennis Hastert, the teacher from Horace Mann in NY, and countless others.

...and the teacher from Beauvoir.

Yes. There are cases of homophobic bullying at the school. We have a large number of same-sex parent families. Some kids have been targeted for who their parents are. Some have been told they're going hell and all sorts of hateful things.

This whole situation is sad.

I've never heard any of that. There are plenty of same-sex parents at OA and never have any said anything like that I've heard. It's 2015, almost all kids in places like DC are pretty much oblivious to same-sex parents.

+1. I have found Oyster families to be very accepting of same-sex parents.
