Do any parents have any insight on their interactions with this teacher?
Giovanni Pena, of Northwest, D.C., was arrested and charged with second-degree sexual abuse of a child, police said. http://www.wusa9.com/story/news/local/dc/2015/06/02/dc-bilingual-school-teacher-arrested-for-sex-abuse/28388297/ |
Whoa! This is very unfortunate. I also appreciate your post title as I found the article title misleading. I am sure DC Bilingual is not pleased by that article's title. Yikes! |
Watching this ow on abc7. So sad. |
According to the school's website, Pena is a fourth grade English teacher and started teaching at Oyster-Adams in 2009. |
What the hell is wrong with people?
Didn't *anyone* see anything "off" with him? |
You're kidding, yes? I was a teammate of Justin Coleman, the 4th grade teacher from Alexandria City who was arrested, convicted AND sentenced to 30 years for child sexual abuse. I taught with him years before when he was in Fairfax. I did not like the guy for many reasons, and none of those reasons crossed into him being "off" with kids in a creepy way. As far as anyone knows, he engaged in the sexual abuse almost 10 years after we taught together. I was pretty shocked when I heard it had happened, as were other teachers who had worked with him. We didn't like him, but we never suspected he could do the things he was convicted of. |
Ugh. So awful. I can't believe nobody noticed anything. |
Allegations people. |
The people who are saying "I can't believe no one noticed anything" are interesting to me.
It makes you feel better to think there is a something you'd notice about a sex offender to protect your child, but having worked with them. There isnt. The horrifying thing is...they can seem just like normal people on the outside. |
And I was part of his circle of friends for about 10-15 years. Every single one of us was completely shocked. Not one single indication, and trust me, we compared notes after. Nothing. The only thing that seemed like him was the fact that he owned up to it quickly, as we had all viewed him as a very honest person. |
This. If it was easy to spot a sex offender it would be a lot easier to keep kids safe. |
+100. Child molesters often work VERY hard to remain above suspicion. That's why their crimes often go unreported for years (and sometimes forever). For examples, please see Dennis Hastert, the teacher from Horace Mann in NY, and countless others. |
I recommend for everybody who's ahead of me on the wait list to think again about sending your child to Oyster. |
