Why is everyone here so obsessed with AP classes? If your kid is truly an AP student, they'd be studying on their own and capable of passing the course regardless of missing *gasp* 4 45 minute classes.

So true! Enough videos and stuff on AP portal to learn.

He’s just trying to rage bait you. Most interactive games are educational for a variety of reasons. Personally, I try to integrate them into class when I can. I’m not sure how smart board basketball works but it might be a nice reward for a class of students who accomplished a goal or objective.

I think this teacher was saying he would literally broadcast the NCAA March Madness games, not play games with kids...

Yup. That Thursday and Friday are already blocked off as make up days and we will have games on while they do make up work. I’ve done this for
years

Wow. Subpar teacher.

Would you rather i take them off and leave them to have make up days with a sub? This way i am at least in the room to assist and answer questions.

College basketball is my biggest hobby. Im allowed to have interests outside of teaching

You’re allowed to have hobbies outside of work. But just as I can’t just watch sports games while I’m working, neither should you! Tape the games and watch them at home…

While there have always been bad teachers, this one is just being a jerk. I’ve never had a teacher who has done this, my kids have never had a teacher who has done this, and I’ve never worked with a teacher who has done this. This is not normal, don’t assume it is because of how flippant they are being about the situation.

—Signed a teacher who is sooo ready to go back! These kids need to be in school!

Yeah, I am still trying to process this. Maybe he has severely low attendance rates and apathetic students and he uses the games as a lure or a reward to ensure they come to class? I don’t know.

Maybe you need a life outside of your job.

If you want to avoid doing your job so much, maybe it’s time you find a new career

He probably has a lot of difficult students and is feeling cynical and burnt out. I think he is probably a good teacher (albeit an unconventional one) and his work depression is making him flippant. Teaching is a tough career and it’s not easy to stay positive all the time.

My kids love my class. We do Warped Tour Wednesdays where I play punk and emo from the 2000s during the warm up. I attend 4-5 afterschool events a week and support all my students with their fundraisers. We have fun in my class

More likely he's the coach that teaches a little on the side. We all had them. They usually end up teaching things like Health or Geography.

I understand. It is difficult to engage apathetic students and you’re finding ways to draw them to the classroom and keep them there, but you should provide some context for “we’re watching basketball games in class” when speaking to parents. There’s already a lot of hostile energy towards teachers on this forum.

Anonymous wrote:Are people actually trying to get over a WEEK off school? Look at the weather report - this ice is not going anywhere. You have had 8 days to dig your car out.

I think most of us are eager for our kids to get back at this point but some of us are actually concerned about the conditions out there. Believe it or not.

Some of us have been out and about since day 1, because of dogs needing to be walked, etc, and "the conditions" are what they are. They are not going to change. Everyone is walking the icy snow without sinking. Everyone is getting salt stuck into their shoe treads and tracking it home. Dogs' paws need to be wiped because the salt is toxic. You dig your car out and you let your kid go to school. The only annoying thing at this point are the snow mounds that block some pedestrian crossings. You had time to get your kid solid boots to walk to school... but my husband navigates them in his worn and slippery sneakers. I am sure some kids will walk to school in inadequate shoes. They will survive, even though it's not ideal. The cold temperatures are fine, unless a bus doesn't arrive, but that's very unlikely next week.

This is how it is, PP. You cannot have perfect conditions all the time.

How will a bus arrive if the roads are not passable? Should parents be calling you when that happens??

The major thoroughfares are clear. If anything, MCPS should create central bus stops that avoid the smaller neighborhood streets right now. It works perfectly fine for the magnet schools.

Or just drive your kid or carpool with other parents. It's not that difficult.

It actually is difficult and when you don’t acknowledge it, you seem crazy and people will dismiss your posts. This is not an easy decision for MCPS. Opening schools with 50% students showing up is not a win for MCPS.

Yes it is. It is really odd that you don’t see that. This is exactly like Covid - where parents expressed the desire to keep kids at home but changed that desire as soon as school opened. Open the schools and the kids will come.

It's fascinating to see how much of the patterns of all of this were set in COVID, including the same attacks on parents who have the audacity to think their kids should go to school.

I will say that I see this situation as a bit different. COVID was a matter of public health. There were concerns about large groups of people being together in a confined space. That I kind of get, even if how it played out was that for kids it didn't really matter. Here, there's no concern with kids being together. The concern is simply whether some kids can get there. That is not an excuse to keep the schools closed.

Are you still this stupid? Kids spread COVID. Teachers and staff died. Do you imagine schools run without adults?

Most private schools seem to function just fine...

It’s much easier to institute changes in a single school than in an entire county. Plus, private schools have parents who care and are involved and are willing to help the school institute reform.

Plenty of area public schools were functioning last week. DCPS opened on Thursday. Alexandria did virtual school starting Wednesday. Anne Arundel and Baltimore also did virtual starting Thursday. MCPS is its own brand of snow day video prioritizing laziness.

I don't see how explaining that he's tired and doesn't want to teach is going to be positive context for the parents.

I don’t think he said that. I imagine he’s trying to build community and keep the kids who would normally skip school or walk the hallways coming to class. A lot of students from low-income or immigrant families are so severely behind in their subject area that lose motivation quickly and they need a lure/ reward system to keep them in class. I teach advanced subject matter so I don’t have this problem.

I never said i was tired. In fact teaching is the best part of my life. I am usually at my school until 7-8 pm every night and i use a lot of my weekends working on things for my class. We work hard and getting 2 days to catch up and unwind with basketball isn’t a bad thing

I definitely had a couple teachers growing up who had March Madness games on during that Thursday and Friday in mid-March. I remember a middle school science teacher updating me on one once too. The games don't start until 12:30 p.m. anyway.

I don’t even watch March Madness at all. No interest.
