To me, "dangerous" implies a significant risk of non-trivial injuries or death. That's not the situation. The conditions make things inconvenient and, at times, uncomfortable. They're not particularly dangerous.

Because it’s not snow, it’s ice and the temperature is not budging so a two hour delay does not do much to help melt it. There are mounds of ice and no sidewalk and lanes are minimum. Where do you advise children walk? Buses that are driving on the one lane road will not be able to see children walking on the same one lane road. Look at the child that just got killed by the bus with no ice. Extend the school year and make sure the children are safe. In addition, as a teacher myself, they put a county poll out to see if we will be coming in. No point in having the kids come in if we the teachers choose to use our leave instead.

You're just going to have to accept that conditions will not change and schools will open this week. If you believe your child is in danger waiting for the bus, please contact local city or county authorities so they can address the snowbank situation at your bus stop (MCPS is only responsible for school properties)... or go and shovel it out yourself.

I don’t understand this logic of “It won’t get better so do nothing and force an opening.” They need to do something or make some accommodations to kids walking to school.

PP you replied to. No. That was the point of my post. There are no accommodations beyond the delays they may or may not declare. Most people have been out and about all week. My kids were clambering up and down the snowbanks. I get that it's less fun to do that while going to school, but come on. This is what a real winter looks like, in case you did not know.

The solutions are baked in -- Open. Leverage crossing guards to have walking school buses for kids who need to navigate around the piles of snow. Centralize bus stops on streets that are too narrow for the buses. This should all be straightforward.

I like this but have a question. If we were to change bus stops today/tonight, how can we guarantee everyone gets the communication? My school routinely has kids show up at normal time when we have 2 hour delays because a lot of parents don't check e-mails and texts.
