The next thing you are going to write is that the “system” is prejudiced against black males and that it’s racist to charge this kid as an adult. Please.

Of course it is.

All the incompetent parents saying that their precious rapist son shouldn’t be held to adult standards because they’re just a mere boy and totally incapable of making good decisions and can’t help not being an evil menace in society should have the ability to go to prison for the crimes themselves. I’d be fine with that.

But SOMEONE is responsible. Either your “kid” should have known better, or YOU should not have let your kid be unsupervised for even a single second, should have been keeping very close tabs whenever they were out of sight, warned everyone that they were capable of rape or worse, keeping a VERY short leash on what you’re claiming is essentially a pit bull who just can’t help himself but hurt whoever he wants without the benefit of rational thought. You claim your teenager is just like a dog who doesn’t know better, then you need to keep him well under your control, under lock and key until you claim he is finally responsible and can be let loose in society. And no, it’s not society’s job to do that. Most teenagers are NOT rapists and don’t need to be treated like ctiminals who apparently are capable of that.

But you can’t have it both ways. You can’t be a total failure of a parent, produce criminals, argue that a slap on the wrist and a few years playing around with some other bad kids in juvie is enough of a punishment. If they aren’t responsible, you are.

It is possible to hold 15-year-olds responsible for crimes by charging them as the juveniles that they are, rather than as the adults that they are not.

I am in shock at the number of people saying these 15 year olds shouldn't be charged as adults because of their future.

What about the victims and their future after being subject to this violence?

They all need rehabilitation. I don't think that means going to an adult prison but a slap on the hand won't do.

Are their any reform experts that can chime in on what the heck would properly punish the offenders and set a new standard?

I can guarantee that any person supporting these teen perps would have a change of heart if their own children were victims.

guaranteed

Sports in this country, especially football, are cult-like and sickly insular. It's no longer about healthy competition. These are war games with brainwashed players.

no thank you

No one. NO ONE is supporting the perps. Some people do not think they should be charged as adults. That is all. That doesn’t mean they should be convicted and punished.

^shouldn’t

Someone said “However charging a 15yr old as an adult for a crime that will effectively ruin their entire lives.”

My view is that the act of committing the RAPE is what has already ruined the defendants’ entire lives. Not the fact that they are charged as adults for it. Again, I don’t think Juveniles should be placed in adult prisons, but I don’t think 5 years separated from society is long enough for forcible sodomy with an object.

They need to be charged as adults. They are old enough to know how horrible their crime was.

Yeah, those kids were ruined a long time ago.

The State Attorney was pressured by the media attention to try the boys as adults. There wouldn't even be a trial if the media hadn't reported the details including the leaked police report.

Well thank god. Put those animals in prison.

-parent of a 15-year-old

Not even when those 15 year olds gang rape their classmates in a locker room?
What they did was horrendous and beyond the pale - but I still think they should be charged as juveniles. It sounds as if there was a culture where they assumed this was "normal" behavior. I'm thinking that some adults fell down on their responsibility to make the correct values clear and allowed this toxic culture to flourish. And NO, I am not excusing what happened. These kids should be punished!! But as an adult? I'm uncomfortable with that.

Oh, please! At 15 every human being, unless intellectually challenged, should know that stuffing an object up someone's ass against their will CAN NOT BE 'normal' behavior. Why do you think minors are often charged as adults for murder?
