Not that PP but try reading this forum and you’ll see that other schools are a problem for kids — and staff are getting harassed in other ways.

+1 MCPS Athletics tweets #weRAISE but the reality is that horrendous behavior is demonstrated by players and coaches through out the school system. Sexual violence as a hazing ritual does not happen in a vacuum.

MCPS has no problem threatening to enforce the Student Code of Conduct especially with the media attention but employees are offered progressive discipline.

Whenever I read or hear of cases of male sexual assault as a form of hazing on sports teams I always think that the perpetrators should be named and shamed. That they should be required to formally stand up in front of the entire student body, admit they have a real and serious problem, that they committed disgusting acts, and that they are in a fact a sexual predator bc normal people do not enjoy or engage in these kind of acts. They should then be required to sit 20 ft from any others in class and not allowed to any student gatherings. They should be required to show attendance and progress in regular therapy. And no this is not mean. This is what needs to happen bc without developing shame and blame they won’t stop. It’s the fear of shame and blame that will fill in for the empathy they don’t have. They will not develop empathy at that age/stage- developmentally the window has passed. One such event like this would quickly help squash any other student’s attempt at trying the same thing.

I think counseling by a trauma expert is greatly needed for situations like Damascus High School. A team of boys did not develop the morality of acting in such a disgusting manor on their own. Hopefully the investigation will delve in to why the boys did what they did but I would suspect that they at some point in their lives had been abused just like the athletes they became the abusers with. I reserve judgement and I just hope MCPS will bring in outside trauma experts to work with all the students involved.

Are you a Damascus parent? You are in the wrong, this is the kind of thing where people refuse to send their kids to school the next day. If I was a Damascus parent, I would demand MCPS send my kid to another school straight away. Nor is this "hazing" or I am not aware what all is considered hazing. We are talking about sexual and physical abuse of the worst kind.

Easier said than done. There are university studies on the power of group mentality. I praise the child who was brave enough to come forward and report the abuse. It could have been a bystander who was powerless to stop the act or it could have been a victim. If this was a ritual hazing that crossed into sexual assault, the child who immediately reported has hopefully prevented additional victims in the future. I am sure more information will be released as the case is investigated and goes to trial.I can't imagine that this case will not result in criminal charges for the boys perpetuating the assault.

I think you will be shocked by the results. These are the people the AD and school principle are allowing to coach and influence our children. Very sad, MCPS needs to do something about the situation in Damascus.
