Cambridge tour vs Sussex tour

Shameful. The only great thing about the tour was William's cultural outfit.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the reception, held at the hilltop Pakistan Monument, in a colourful auto rickshaw, with Kate, 37, wearing a glittering green dress and William dressed in a traditional sherwani suit. Jonny Dymond, the BBC’s royal correspondent, tweeted: “Six Pakistani ministers walked out of the #RoyalVisitPakistan British High Commission reception on Monday night @bbcurdu reports. They were reportedly annoyed at their place in the gathering. Commission response to follow.”

He later wrote: “The Commission has replied. It says the Duke and Duchess ‘were delighted to meet a range of people from across Pakistani society’.”

A report by BBC Urdu said half a dozen ministers and close advisers left the event because they were not allowed to meet the duke and duchess. The report claimed the officials were not allowed to go near the royal couple due to “rigid security arrangements”. An adviser to Prime Minister Imran Khan told BBC Urdu that the “very stupid” security measures were made by British officials. Refusing to allow cabinet ministers to meet the royals was “disgraceful,” the unnamed adviser added. The adviser said Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry would make a complaint to British authorities.

The reporters who went with them. They were supposed to do a number of things but Monday was a wash because they arrived in the middle of the night and Friday was gone because they got stuck in Lahore on Thursday. They spent 5 days in Pakistan and only did 12 engagements. And before you say -- that's not so bad, Meghan did 19 while carrying a newborn around and Harry did 31 at the same time. For the Pacific tour they did 50+ each.

Cancelled:

- Visit to Khyber Mountain Pass and viewing of Afghan border
- Meet & Greet with Khyber Rifles Artillery Corps
- Tea with the Lahore, Pakistan Governor
- Minar-e-Pakistan National Monument Pictures & Reception
- Visit to terrorist attack site of Army Public School

Kate is following the Queen's model of how to be royal, while Meghan is following Diana's. In my opinion, Kate is playing the smarter game.
Think about it--
Everyone admires the Queen, but how much does anyone really know about her? We know she likes corgis, horses, and. . . .? She has never talked about her likes, dislikes, complaints, etc. She deliberately masks her opinions and personality in public life. Have you ever heard her give a speech--even after 70+ years of speaking, she still reads in a flat schoolgirl voice. That mask of boring respectability allows her to have a private life since the impression is that there isn't much for the press to talk about. In a few years, when Kate's looks have faded, she'll cease to be the center of attention, and she and William will have completely settled down into a respectable uncontroversial public face, and a more-or-less normal private life with their children and a handful of discreet friends.

Harry and Megan, though, are more like Diana was and not hiding their emotions and passions. This makes them much more interesting to the press and public. It can be a valuable way of approaching the job, since it does bring more attention to their causes. However, it also means that they are in the spotlight and the lines between their personal lives and public lives get very blurred.

In an ideal world, the royal family could have public lives where they pursue and promote their causes and interests, and then have private lives that the press and public have no access to. But the reality is that they need to make a choice. And then not complain, since there is nothing more off-putting than someone who has every luxury in the world complaining about their lot in life--especially if they married into it.

I think The Queen’s popularity has a lot to do with her age at this point. Same way Charles is growing more popular as he reaches his senior years. I don’t think they were so admired playing the “smarter game” when they were middle aged and the same will happen for William and Kate.

This.

And when they’re dead no one has anything to say about them.

You know who the Queen is modeling her behavior after?

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. No one has any thought to spare about her and the only revelations that came out about her post-death was that she had a crazy gambling addiction and was vindictive.

Kate wants an air of mystery that also absolves her from doing anything but the minimum required. That’ll just leave her legacy as what it is today - withdrawn, lazy, and unintelligent.

This. There are pros and cons to each approach, but the two couples are clearly making deliberate choices about which path to take.

No one told them to schedule their tour two weeks after Harry's and Meghan's concluded. They had an entire spring and summer (during which they took MONTHS off) to go on tour while Meghan was pregnant and post-partum.

That and they just have bad luck that their tour started the day of the Queen's Speech and opening of Parliament (notice they don't complain about that) and Boris Johnson's getting a landmark Brexit deal on the day before their tour ended.

There's nothing they can do about it. I remember when it was announced that Harry and Meghan would not receive a separate court at Windsor and instead all their communications would fall under Buckingham Palace and the Queen's eye.

Well, now Buckingham is backing the Sussexes and there isn't a damned thing the Cambridges or Kensington Palace can do about it.

Buckingham Palace was helping to promote a documentary about Harry and Meghan's Africa tour releasing clips of Harry criticising the press and Meghan saying how tough it had been for her as a new mum.

Sorry, can you translates for me? What does separate court at Windsor mean? Buckingham = Queen? Who’s Kesington?

Each of the 'Senior' royals - the Queen and her husband, the Prince of Wales (Charles) and his wife, and Prince William (the heir's heir) and his wife have their own 'court'.

A court is essentially an independent office for their staff, media personnel, and advisors to coordinate their activities independent of interference from anyone else.

Like the President of the United States has the West Wing and traditionally the First Lady has an East Wing. Or the President's office versus the Secretary of State's office.

Traditionally only the monarch and the heir apparent have a court, so QEII and Charles, but circumstances are different because William is his late 30s and they decided not to wait until he was Prince of Wales.

Anyway, Prince Harry petitioned for a court and to have his based at Windsor Castle. For reference, the courts are traditionally based at the senior royals residence.

So the Queen's court is at Buckhingham Palace. Prince Charles's court is at Clarence House. Prince William's court is at Kensington Palace.

Harry argued that he was a senior royal and doing far more work than his brother and his wife who have their own court. But his petition was denied because yada-yada he's not the heir.

End of story: Prince Harry was instead given his own staff and press media team AT Buckingham Palace under the supervision of the Queen's court.

So everything he does is run by the Queen and her aides first. While William and Charles' actions don't need to be first checked by the Queen's aides only in line with expectation.

So anyone complaining about his documentaries or what not can take their complaints straight to the Queen. Nothing goes out with her team's approval.

Thanks, this is very helpful.

If typically only the monarch and heir apparent get their own court, then why would Harry expect to have his own? He's about 5th or 6th in line, right? William is third in line and expected to be a future monarch.

I assumed the Queen backed all her descendants? It seems that would make the most sense since she wants to keep the monarchy going, but I haven't followed this.

Not sure what your question is in bolded.

As for why should Harry expect is his own...you answered your question. Why would William get a court when its only for the monarch and the heir apparent?

Victoria had numerous grown third-in-line grandkids as well...none of them got a court.

I think she’s here - she’s just put on her crazy image embedding hat on.

I mean Kate can be called a lot of things but unintelligent is not one of them.... and the lazy thing is debatable- she clearly loves being a mom and her kids are her main focus- which is as it should be when you have three so young. Don’t mistake humility and duty for stupidity.

There's no mistaking anything. The woman literally can't string a sentence together. https://twitter.com/thetrendymoda/status/1184805381261926400

With William barely holding back laughter at any point.

It's such a good documentary and very different from the 'usual' royal docs (which are dry and about sheep *looking at you Charles*)
