Both the Cambridges and the Sussexes had tours this fall. The Sussexes toured South Africa together while Harry flew on to Malawi, Angola, and Botswana. The Cambridges toured Pakistan together.
I think both tours went well with the each starting off strong and each had a pivotal shot of the couples interacting with the local population.
The end of the tours couldn't have been more different. Harry's letter was shocking but ensured his tour ended with a roar. While William's end was a bit lackluster (although through no fault of their own) because they had to cancel the last day and sort of...snuck out of the country. Also I was very surprised to find out that only 50 journalists elected to go with the Cambridges on their tour. When over 100 journalists went with the Sussexes just three weeks before. |

As far as outfits and 'couture' diplomacy Kate won hands down. She knocked it out of the park with several of her appearances.
As far as impact and outreach, I think Meghan killed it. Her speeches, skilled engagements, and personal warmth went over extremely well. |
| Please don’t compare them. This tour in Pakistan was dangerous, not a fun tour to speak out and dance. |
| Plus, it highlighted the country, it’s positives and it’s people. That’s what the royals should do. Not highlight themselves. |
The Pakistan tour was supposed to be a showing of diplomatic mettle that was “complex and historic”. I was expecting meetings with business leaders, substantive diplomatic talks, military exercises, and humanitarian aid forays. The tour instead was one for children. They sat in hospital beds and wore play crowns, attended a birthday party, played cricket, and petted puppies. |

Night-and-day.
Meghan nailed the social connection aspect which is the key to ‘soft’ diplomacy and Diana nailed the humanitarian connection with a heart which allowed her to increase the focus on things like cancer treatment and medical aid. Kate is missing all that. She looked amazing but the Pakistan tour was a joke especially as they kept referencing Diana when she was younger than ALL of them but did so much more on her Pakistan trips. |

Royal courtiers said Meghan ‘overshadowed’ their tour.
Gee, I wonder why those same courtiers didn’t complain that the QUEEN or maybe BORIS JOHNSON overshadowed their tour? Incompetent airheads. |
+1 But I think Meghan deliberately dressed down and rewore outfits so as to avoid scrutiny on her wardrobe and its expense. As far as the two duchesses go, Meghan comes off as by far the more accomplished, professional, and successful of the two which is weird considering Kate has been doing this for 8 years longer. Meghan is much better at engaging with regular people and articulating her thoughts. |
Is she? She sounded dim in that distraught interview posted on the other thread. I get that motherhood is hard, and that it's impossible to understand that until you go through it. But she signed up to be a princess, no one made her do it. What was she expecting? |
+1 on immediate poster. Meghan is needy. "Not many people have asked if I'm ok." Kate wouldn't say such a thing, she would get on with it. Thank goodness Kate gave England and heir and two spares. |
You know what I want? Some reporter SOMEWHERE to legitimately question why a 12-year-old is a better princess/speaker than Kate. Not even duchess-to-duchesss. Here is 12-year-old Infanta of Spain giving a speech today. Here is 38-year-old Kate doing the same thing yesterday. |
Get on with what, being lauded while doing the most mediocre job possible? |
Kate is an empty headed vessel for birthing babies. That's it. That's all you can expect out of her. |
Well, what exactly would you expect that to be like? Do tell. |

The Sussex team really needs their own Twitter account. Omid Scobie (the reporter who broke the clip of Meghan from her South Africa tour) got 50,000 RTs in half a day.
