So true! Or, when black people are involved..they're called "riots" too. |
Yes. I also thing civil servants get at least some life insurance as a benefits package. |
Wrong on both counts. I have no idea why people think this man was "wealthy." There are a lot of people who work for the Senate who have "blue collar" jobs. The maximum compensation for Senate staffers is capped by law at $172,500, and very few staffers make anywhere near that amount (usually limited to a Chief of Staff, or Staff Director of a Committee, and even many of those do not). Admin staffers are usually paid well less than $100,000, and it's not unusual to have young staff assistants who make $30,000 to $40,000. Copy room staff, etc are paid comparable to what they would be paid outside the Senate. Many of the non-partisan Admin staff stay for years for the same reason people work in other fed jobs -- a lot of them are under the "old" pension system (which has been dramatically scaled back for new hires) and it's one of the few places you can have a "blue collar" job and get a pension at all. Pure Admin staff (like the gentleman in question here) may have still been able to get government health benefits (FEHB), but almost all Senate staff are now on Obamacare, which means that their health care benefits are ridiculously expensive, as well. Going forward, you're going to see fewer and fewer people work on the Hill for an extended period. Trust fund babies, and people who have other means of support (spouses has a good job with health benefits) will do a stint on the Hill "get their ticket punched" and leave (which is a bad thing for many reasons). You can look up what any individual staff member makes on line on Legistorm, if you're really interested. Senate staffers, like all federal employees, can choose to purchase life insurance through the federal benefits program (FEGLI), but it is pretty minimal coverage and not a good deal. Most Hill HR people will advise staff that they should buy life insurance from another source. The old saw that people go to work for the federal government because the benefits are so awesome is no longer true. I found benefits in the corporate world to be much better. |
Interesting photo choice with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the booth. |
Why no arrests yet? |
Good question... |
What if a white person gets in a fight and the video is on world star hip hop?! |
Is there a Reddit thread on this? |
This is starting to make me think of Serial’s Sh!town podcast |
No thread in the DC reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/washingtondc/ I'm surprised. Does someone want to make a thread? Let's see what happens. Like I said, this would normally be a lengthy thread on Reddit. I'm wondering if the family/Reddit is worried about conservative conspiracy mongers picking up on it and treating him similar to Seth Rich? |
Has anybody seen any updates on this yet? |
The large amount got me curious. Gofundme doesn’t say this, but a news article says this of his death: The staffer, identified as Jacob Thomas Brewer, 34, of Alexandria, died after his bicycle went out of control at a sharp curve, crossed the double yellow lines and collided with an oncoming vehicle in the Mount Airy area around 3:40 p.m., according to Howard County police. He was pronounced dead at the scene. |
He was also riding the bike at the time for a charity race. Just fyi. |
You’d think they would have closed the road to oncoming traffic. |
Probably not a race then. Races generally are done on courses where traffic is managed. Rides generally just have marked routes and supported rest stops. |
