Senate Staffer Dies Days After Fight Outside Navy Yard Restaurant

Anonymous
Apparently this happened at the Scarlet Oak in Navy Yard and the fight started with words inside. Anyone know who he was fighting?

I assumed it was the young man in the photo and was shocked it was the father.

Yep, it was the Dad and this picture is a decade old so he was even older. Wonder what the fight was about.

That’s so sad

Very sad. Not just for his family, but for all the youth he coached.

I wonder why the restaurant didn’t call the police when the argument broke out. An argument between one patron and a large group indicates some intervention might be needed.

How do you know it was a large group that he was opposite? Didn't see that anywhere.

Also this is an upscale restaurant so calling the police seems out of character.

Ohh, more details. Apparently he passed 2 days ago.

For folks asking about what happened outside Scarlet Oak last night, MPD-1D mailing list says a person got into a "dispute" with a group of people & that person was subsequently assaulted by the group. The person is apparently in the hospital, according to @DCPoliceDept .

Your answer was in the article, but someone else reposted below.

Maybe calling the police isn’t the ambiance patrons expect, but neither is a argument like that, right? And it would have saved this guy’s life.

As some of you may already know, he was assaulted outside his neighborhood restaurant/bar (across the street from his condo - think of Cheers for Bud) by a group of individuals at 11:30pm on Wednesday night. Apparently the altercation started inside with arguing but the assault happened outside. We talked to the police and they have the puzzle almost finished, all assailants have been identified and they are just collecting more evidence. We expect them to make arrest in the next few days.

So the arrests are coming at least. Glad D.C. metro is on it quickly.

Also there's a Gofundme for his wife and teenage son (he had two older adult children as well) - https://www.gofundme.com/1n7nudzdxc

This is why it’s never smart to punch people, because you never know if someone might die and now you’re a murderer.

Wonder if it's political in nature?

According to Popville comments there were threats and a knife possibly involved (though not used). I wonder if they followed him out of the restaurant?

A group of people against one individual. No. This isn't another Seth Rich so please don't start the conspiracy theories.

High-profile victim with political connections. No way it would move this fast for a MAGA hat tourist from Iowa or an AA college student home in DC for summer break.

There's nothing high profile about it. He worked in the copy-room of the Senate building. Also his family asked a WashPost staffer to cover the article (its in the CaringBridge update) because no one was giving it sufficient attention.'

And it moved just as fast for Wendy Martinez. Her killer was caught within 24 hours.

Compare that to that poor Ohio town where 8 members of the Rhoden family were killed in one night and it took 2 years for charges to be filled and brought back from Alaska for arrest warrants.
