As some of you may already know, he was assaulted outside his neighborhood restaurant/bar (across the street from his condo - think of Cheers for Bud) by a group of individuals at 11:30pm on Wednesday night. Apparently the altercation started inside with arguing but the assault happened outside. We talked to the police and they have the puzzle almost finished, all assailants have been identified and they are just collecting more evidence. We expect them to make arrest in the next few days. So the arrests are coming at least. Glad D.C. metro is on it quickly. Also there's a Gofundme for his wife and teenage son (he had two older adult children as well) - https://www.gofundme.com/1n7nudzdxc
Why would there be a Gofundme? I would assume a well-paid Senate staffer would have life insurance.
Uh, "well paid" and Senate are not usually used in the same sentence. This guy is a civil servant working in the basement copy machine and document office. You really think he was well paid?
Yes. I also thing civil servants get at least some life insurance as a benefits package.
Wrong on both counts. I have no idea why people think this man was "wealthy." There are a lot of people who work for the Senate who have "blue collar" jobs. The maximum compensation for Senate staffers is capped by law at $172,500, and very few staffers make anywhere near that amount (usually limited to a Chief of Staff, or Staff Director of a Committee, and even many of those do not). Admin staffers are usually paid well less than $100,000, and it's not unusual to have young staff assistants who make $30,000 to $40,000. Copy room staff, etc are paid comparable to what they would be paid outside the Senate. Many of the non-partisan Admin staff stay for years for the same reason people work in other fed jobs -- a lot of them are under the "old" pension system (which has been dramatically scaled back for new hires) and it's one of the few places you can have a "blue collar" job and get a pension at all. Pure Admin staff (like the gentleman in question here) may have still been able to get government health benefits (FEHB), but almost all Senate staff are now on Obamacare, which means that their health care benefits are ridiculously expensive, as well. Going forward, you're going to see fewer and fewer people work on the Hill for an extended period. Trust fund babies, and people who have other means of support (spouses has a good job with health benefits) will do a stint on the Hill "get their ticket punched" and leave (which is a bad thing for many reasons). You can look up what any individual staff member makes on line on Legistorm, if you're really interested. Senate staffers, like all federal employees, can choose to purchase life insurance through the federal benefits program (FEGLI), but it is pretty minimal coverage and not a good deal. Most Hill HR people will advise staff that they should buy life insurance from another source. The old saw that people go to work for the federal government because the benefits are so awesome is no longer true. I found benefits in the corporate world to be much better.
