How much to give as bar mitzvah gift?

Anonymous
There is no hard rule for any of this. Just like weddings or birthdays these days, really anything goes. DD will have her bat mitzvah this Fall and she will be grateful for whatever she gets. More important to her right now is her mitzvah project and she will be asking people to help support it. In fact if it's either/or then she would probably rather the guest spends money on the project. And before you jump to conclusions, we are not wealthy-HHI < 120. But I think the kids today are taught to focus more on how they can make an impact on their community during the b'nai mitzvot process and the kids are excited to show what they can do.
To answer your question, it is fine to give what you would give for a birthday gift. Or give more if you would like. Kids know it's generally the parents who buy the gift, not the friend, and the kid is just happy to have her peers at the event.

If you want the kid to have the money now to enjoy, do a gift card like Amazon. All the checks go into a savings account.

$108 or $118

NP here. Thank you. The son of one of my best friends from college has his Bar Mitzvah this summer and we were trying to figure out what the best amount to give him is. As a goy, I was going to give $130 ($10 for each year to becoming a man) but I'll go with one of these instead unless I come up with an actual gift. I still have 5 weeks to try to think of a good gift.

If you're non-Jewish and non-rich, I reall think $25, or $36, is more than enough. $100 is what a poor aunt gives.

How about for twins, whole family is invited and my kid is best friends with one twin?

Same gift amount for both children even though one is the best friend and one is not. Whatever you give is fine.

Yikes. All you people who can give a lot of money should meet teenage latinas having their quinceañeras. At my cousins quince, she got $700 in total!

We're not Jewish, but have been invited to a few. I know they are a big deal in a kids life so we give $108.

Jewish people are as a whole much more wealthy than the Hispanic population. So of course Jewish kids are racking it in . This is just the beginning of a whole litany of things that will be put in motion that will set a Jewish person up for a very financially successful uccessful life.

I work in a heavily Jewish profession and I see this day in and day out. Good for them! Im taking notes and will take care of my kids and my kids kids as best I can.

And here comes the antisemites.

What about a combo of gift card and check that, combined are a multiple of $18?

DD is going to one where the recipient asked for donations to an animal shelter, which is lovely. We’ll put together a bag of items, but would like to get a small gift for the girl as well. Thinking gift card for $36?

+1 Two cards at $25 each is what we did.

Well, I was thinking more of a $40 gift card AND a $68 check (combined $108).
