Yes, and we saw that with Trayon. Look at how far he is pushing it! He got away with the Rothschild's conspiracy theory (I am among those who does not believe a magna cum laude college graduate who ALSO associates with bigtime bigots like Farrakahn didn't know what he was saying).....then he got away with some lie about a meeting to duck out of the Holocaust tour......he made a remark about the ghetto being a "gated community" (those rich Jews, right?) ....and he barely gets a slap on the wrist. And now, at a rally hosted in his name, a despicable Farrakhan bigot launches an anti-Jew attack, and Trayon refuses to condemn his remarks or even COMMENT on it. (The WaPo tried but was given an indifferent no comment.) His tweeter page (I haven't checked this afternoon but as of this morning) simply had a big "THANK YOU" to his constituents. |
A great topic for a thread is WHY Jewish people are scapegoated, now and throughout history, despite the fact they contribute to society and have some values worth emulating. The problem is....such a discussion would bring out the bigots bigtime and become a disaster in short order. No can do. |
Except it's more - MUCH MORE - than one uninvited jackass and the punk ass politician who let him speak. The fact that you are minimizing the degree to which anti-Semitism is overlooked here in DC is part and parcel of the problem. It is ALSO Trayon, who should have jumped at the opportunity to condemn the "jackass," especially in light of his questionable comments and behavior regarding Jews last week, and yet....he has refused to condemn him. But the real problem is that the DC Council appears to be willing to look past his anti-Semitism and in doing so signaling that anti-Semitism, if not actually encouraged, certainly is nothing that warrants any actions when it occurs at the leadership level. Combine that with the fact that DC grant money supports programs hosted or run by blatant anti-Semites, and there's a message being sent that bigotry against Jews is no big deal. |
Let’s hope the counter-message being sent doesn’t turn into resentment towards black Washingtonians. |
| What is it with blacks against Jews? I don't even understand how they could even bother each other. |

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks
And the black folks hate the white folks To hate all but the right folks is an old established rule But during National Brotherhood Week National Brotherhood Week Lena Horne and Sheriff Clark are dancing cheek to cheek It's fun to eulogize the people you despise As long you don't let them in your school Oh, the poor folks, hate the rich folks And the rich folks hate the poor folks All of my folks hate all of your folks It's American as apple pie But during... National Brotherhood Week National Brotherhood Week New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans cause it's very chic Stand up and shake the hand of someone you can't stand You can tolerate him if you try Oh the Protestants hate the Catholics And the Catholics hate the Protestants And the Hindus hate the Muslims And everybody hates the Jews, But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week, It's National "Everyone-Smile-At-One-Another-hood" Week, Be nice to people who are inferior to you It's only for a week so have no fear Be grateful that it doesn't last all year - National Brotherhood Week Tom Lehrer Album - That Was The Year That Was |
What counter-message? That antisemtism by DC public officials will not be tolerated by the mayor or the council? It sounds as if you're saying that the DC Council should soft-peddle antisemitism if it occurs among black leaders because taking a strong stand against bigots could engender resentment to all blacks. And even THAT shows a problem: let's not make a big deal about antisemites in official DC positions, who happen to be black, because it might not be good for black Washingtonians. Would you then say that if antisemtitism were advanced by a white DC official, we could come down harder? |
You saying it’s some kind of prerequisite for all blacks? What do you think in between eating watermelons and getting locked up that it’s a part of black culture to hate Jews? |
I’m saying let’s hope the response stays focused on the public officials and doesn’t get deflected onto the entire black community. Problem? |

OP here. (I keep forgetting to identify myself.....)
Elisa Silverman is calling for the firing of Joshua Lopez, which I believe sends the message to all Washungtonians, black and white, that bigotry against ANY group is unacceptable. In this case, the bigotry was against Jews, and that is no more acceptable than bigoty against Muslims, blacks, gays, and others subject to prejudice. I just wish she would call for the resignation of White, as well, who has revealed himself to be sympathetic to hateful antisemites. https://wtop.com/dc/2018/04/dc-council-member-wants-action-anti-semitic-remarks/ |
Good. |
You see that my focus is on those in official DC positions, as stated above. That's where the problem lies. |
Similarly, I hope the ouster of Lopez doesn't get deflected into resentment of the entire Jewish community, who, after all, were the ones called termites by a disgusting human being - while Lopez held the megaphone for him. |
Fair enough. But it does seem like the issue goes a little deeper into the far-left black community leaders, like Tamika Mallory, who are stubbornly unable to disavow antisemitism and the NOI's antisemitism. It's not just public officials. For whatever reasons, anti-semitic language has been allowed to persist in certain black radical circles, and leaks over into more mainstream black leaders associating with them. |
OP here. There's a lot of truth in what you say, and I see mainstream black leaders' association with Farrakhan and his co-conspirators - in those instances where it occurs - as the root of the problem. We've had posters here point out that Farrakhan does some good for poor black communities, but that does not overcome the antisemtitc venom he spews and the hatred he spreads. As the saying goes, you lie down with dogs and you rise up with fleas, and we see that with Trayon and the example you brought up - Tamika Mallory. DC needs to completely sever its relationship with the NOI, and that should include grants to organization with ties to Farrakhan, as well. |
