Farrakhan Speaker Concludes Anti-Semitic Remarks with "Jews are Termites" at Trayon Support Rally

^^^ I think people were really good on focusing their comments on the behavior of Josh Lopez, the remarks of the Farrakhan scumball, and Trayon's response (or lack thereof) to the vile speech that took place at a rally in his name.

But as the OP of this thread, I hereby pronounce the following as the truth: Some portion of Ward 8 residents are no doubt antisemitic, and the other portion no doubt are not. End of story.

Some white people are racist, some aren’t. End of story?

No, but I'm responding to posters above who are we shouldn't think that people in Ward 8 are antisemitic because of the actions of their leader (who has refused to condemn disgusting antisemitic remarks, along with other actions.) I take a realistic view that some people in Ward 8 do harbor antisemitic attitudes, and some do not. That's all. We just shouldn't go so overboard and say that the people in Ward 8 are all neutral to Jews. That's the "head in the sand" approach to DC antisemitism.....denying it exists, except for one or two isolated cases.

What's with the "their leader" thing? He's a friggin councilmember not a damn tribal chief. There are over 70 thousand people in Ward 8...you know how many votes Trayon got in 2016? A little over 27 thousand which is less than half. Couple that with the fact that he barely won the primary over incumbent LaRuby May (51% to 42%) and taking into account the fact that he ran unopposed in the general election thus putting people who want to exercise their vote in the prohibitive predicament of voting for him or writing in Big Bird (which I wouldn't be surprised if some did) and it doesn't exactly look to me like he fits the description of "their leader" Looks to me like he's just the guy about 1/3 of the few folks in Ward 8 who who bothered to vote in 2016 only did so because there was no alternative.

Well by that logic since we elected the lying egotistical sexist hypocritical bigot who currently occupies 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as our country's leader I guess that means EVERYBODY has their head in the sand - not just the folks in Ward 8.

yes, to some degree. I attended the women's march in January 2017, kicking off the "resistance". Where is the equivalent (proportionate to population) equivalent in Ward 8?

No doubt there's a Ward 8 anti-Semitism Resistance Movement in the works, but it's probably just in the early planning stages right now seeing how folks are still trying to put the finishing touches on the Ward 8 Unemployment/Underemployment Resistance Movement and the Ward 8 Troubled Schools/Poor Education Resistance Movement and the Ward 8 Crime/Violence Resistance Movement and the Ward 8 Homelessness/Lack of Affordable Housing Resistance Movement...you get the idea.
Have patience. I'm sure an equivalent (proportionate to population) "resistance" to your satisfaction will manifest itself in due time.

Nice sarcasm.

I'm not expecting Ward 8 residents to start an anti-Semitism resistance movement....I mean, really. At the most, I just hope that are neutral about Jews, but fear that some of they have bought into the anti-Jew talk because they see their representative seems accepting of absolutely reprehensible vitriol.

Farrakhan's anti-Semitic influence in the black community is seen everywhere. You know how the Farrakhan scum called Silverman "a fake Jew"? Well, the black man who beat up the old Orthodox Jew in NY (a couple of weeks ago) for saying hello to him also said "I don't say hello to fake Jews."

I just don't know how we stop Farrakhan, but it does need to start at the local level, with local representatives condemning the hate. The fact that White REFUSED to refute the remarks is despicable.

PP you are responding to

You do realize that this sounds very much like the excuse making done for rural whites who support Trump, eh? "they have severe social and economic problems, so its okay that they ignore the bigotry of their elected officials".

I mean I don't really expect mass rallies in Ward 8 against CM White, just as I don't expect mass rallies in coal country against Trump. But I think the other PP who said We just shouldn't go so overboard and say that the people in Ward 8 are all neutral to Jews. That's the "head in the sand" approach to DC antisemitism.....denying it exists, except for one or two isolated cases. was not wrong.

And I would add that just as the presence of white nationalism bigotry in WVa, etc, does not increase sympathy for the social and economic problems of white rural america, the presence of NOI bigotry in W8 does not increase sympathy for the social and economic problems of W8.

Regardless, he is their elected representative, thus, their leader.

Hey do what you gotta do. Put the onus on the folks of Ward 8 to wipe out anti-Semitism in the whole city. Sounds like a shitty plan to me but if you think it'll work more power to ya.

Would you please just stop? We get it. You think concerns about anti-semitism are overblown, and people shouldn't be held accountable for making those statements because they don't really mean anything, and there are bigger things to worry about.

If you say that’s what I think...okay...you the mack, I can’t argue with your interpretations.
Personally I thought I was more so hinting that maybe you should put some heat on Mayor Bowser about this.
I mean shit she's been rather quiet on all this and what little responses she's given have been mild at best.
Plus it was her appointee (Joshua Lopez) that allowed that fool to get a hold of the megaphone to say that hateful crap to begin with and she resisted calls for his removal - he left on his own accord - what's up with her passivity?

Personally I thought I was more so querying why the emphasis on put all the responsibility for denouncing anti-Semitism in the city on the folks of Ward 8 shoulders and wondering why not place the burden where it belongs, on the elected officials who are evidently complicit in ignoring bigotry.
Shit even Councilmember Elissa Silverman who was the target of the "fake Jew" remarks said herself in a letter she recently wrote to Mayor Bowser and her DC Council colleagues, "I will admit even I’ve been guilty of letting anti-Jewish remarks slide, because I didn’t want to cause friction or disruption."

City leaders got power and influence too, why not push them to better address these issues? But it’s all good...we get it...it’s only black folks in Ward 8 who are espousing anti-Semitic attitudes so in addition to struggling to make ends meet and get home in one piece it’s their job to address this too.
I’m just saying if you expect the folks in Ward 8 to rid the whole city of anti-Semitism it's gonna be a while...you know how colored folks are lol. I figured if you want faster results as far as changing the culture and climate of the city then maybe it’d be best to put the onus where it belongs, on elected officials.
You the mack though so I won’t argue about your game plan.

Nice day out - enjoy.
