Farrakhan Speaker Concludes Anti-Semitic Remarks with "Jews are Termites" at Trayon Support Rally

This whole mess has made him stronger in the eyes of his constituents. They support him more now than ever, because many of them believe the same things, and now they're seeing "their guy" attacked for it.

If people would've just ignored this, it would've been better. Now he's stronger than he was before.

You may be right that this has made him stronger, at least within his specific constituency, but I am still not sure ignoring it would have been better. If nothing else, hopefully it would hurt him if he ever wanted to run for city-wide office. And ignoring things creates its own legitimacy.

Problem is, antisemtism isn't restricted to Ward 8. And the fact that the mayor and council are afraid to take action shows they know how widespread it is.

Many of the online comments I read (not here....elsewhere) are in support of Trayon and vehemently against the Jews. I read repeatedly that they feel Trayon spoke "the truth" about Jews (what truth? that they control the weather?) and he shouldn't back down to them. It's so bad now that if a DC official makes antisemtic statements and Jews object, they (the Jews) are put in their place with further bigoted comments. It's as though they are looked down upon to such a degree that they are expected to just accept racist comments without any pushback at all.

I am going to a major Jewish event next month. I trust there will be top security.

OP here. Only 15 responses to this horrific show of antisemitism, and half of them were mine.

Apparently, the muted response shows that there is no defense to this incident - why didn't Lopez just lower the megaphone when the Farrakhan speaker starting spewing his venom, and why didn't White condemn the remarks? - and that in the face of blatant "Jew-hatred," there is deafening silence from (some) DC politicians and, based on the input here, DC residents as well. (In fairness, Jeff did express outrage, but most of DCUM, shhhhhh......)

How different from the response to the "questionable" actions and behavior of White, to whom much of DCUM raced to defend. That's because with White, up until yesterday when he appears to agree with the Farrakhan supporter by refusing to condemn him, one could bend into a pretzel and give the guy the benefit of the doubt. The vast majority of DC is comprised of liberals, and particularly DC officials, who portend to object to bigotry. Why then is there such silence when BLATANTLY anti-Semitic speech (termites? really?) is put forth? Is antisemitism "an OK" form of bigotry?

Lopez....OUT! White....RESIGN! And the DC Council, along width severing all ties to Farrakhan, should issue apologies to the Jewish people and ensure them that such bigotry will not be tolerated in our city.

Doubt that very, very much. Why would amazon not come to nova? Why would people not “travel” to DC? DC is a highly educated area that has become fantastically wealthy.

P.S. I just checked Trayon's twitter. Not a WORD about the antisemite who spoke at the "support Trayon" rally! And he has been asked to comment and has refused. Thus, he has condoned the Farrkhan speaker's remarks - both the anti-Jew attack on Silverman and the "Jews are termites" vomit.

Now it almost seems that he's showing the Jews that he can get away with anything and is rubbing their faces in it. That's why this should have been nipped in the bud. You guys who defended his actions last week gave him the proverbial "inch" - and so he took a mile. And so did others, as the tone was set.

I am as appalled by this as you are! I think you are the OP, and I am a PP who has responded a couple of times. I am also surprised this thread hasn't blown up with outrage. I think it might be the timing as it is the weekend and folks are distracted. I'm sure the council members all hope this will go away by Monday. I feel terrible for Silverman and wonder how she will move forward under this blatant hate talk.

NP. I don't live in DC, have really nothing to do with DC, and personally watching all this (because it is starting to make national media and so I recognized the name), I am wondering whether I want to spend travel dollars in DC. And I am not Jewish.

Yes, I'm the OP you're responding to.

And true what you say about the council members hoping it will go away by Monday, but that right there shows the problem. When horrific anti-Jew venom is spilled, the hope seems to be that it will blow over after a couple of days - and that's an awful message to communicate. They are basically saying that no action will be taken when blatant antisemitism is revealed by one of their members, with the hope that the Jews will "settle down" after 48 hours or so.

I too feel sorry for Silverman. The only appropriate responses are to 1) fire Lopez, 2) issue a scathing censure to White and call for his resignation, 3) sever all ties with the Farrkhan cult (they're as bad as neo-Nazis on the conservative side), and 4) issue a heartfelt apology to the Jewish people.

Nothing is going to come of this unfortunately, it will blow over. Sadly, NOI and other anti-Jewish organizations are really normal here. I mean, have you not ever listened to 1450 WOL AM radio? They say much much worse on there. They have meetings and conferences in NE DC all the time-at a child care center that rents their space out to black nationalist organizations while not in use for daycare. It’s pretty appalling. Signed, not Jewish, atheist, but believe we should all be tolerant of each other.

PP here. Also I don't know the history here at all and I would need to read about all of this before I really made any set decision. All I am saying is my shallow and outsider perspective is that DC now has an openly anti-Semitic council member and that's the sort of thing I would want to think about as a visitor.

OP here, and no....haven't listened to that radio station. (I don't. think I'll start, either.) What makes the whole thing worse with the NOI and other black nationalist groups is that they of all people should be aware of the harm that bigotry against minority groups cause. And yet here they are, objecting to the bigotry against blacks while perpetuating it against Jews. Disgusting.

....yes, and the Council is accepting of the fact that an openly anti-Semitic council member continues to serve. It's a disgrace.

OP here, and I'm going out now. Didn't want anyone to think that my absence on this thread for the next several hours means I've lost interest. (Fat chance.)

(In the meantime, if any DC residents know of local organizations that fight antisemitism here, I'd appreciate knowing about them. Thanks.)

I was searching for childcare years ago, and the CHILD center on Riggs road is near, but after researching them and finding out their connections to NOI, Positive Kimetic Visions, and the Nawaupian movement (which I never had knowledge about before), it was really troubling. I just don’t know how they would treat non-African American children there. Honestly, I wouldn’t have put my child in there care for other reasons, but I was amazed at what I found out about them.

Just wanted to add some of the things PKV does is positive, but they are also anti-semetic, separatist, homophobic, and against interracial relationships.
