Fed Hiring Freeze

The amount of disdain that he has for the work I do, and have done for the federal government for the past 27 years of my life is pretty disheartening.

I feel like nearly all administrative and "non specialized" positions (i.e. not doctors and lawyers) have pretty much been filled via veterans preference in recent years. It's a pretty guaranteed route to hiring when your only marketable skills are infantry. Guess that's over for now.

It's red meat for the majority of his base.

I would assume yes. Hoping for more specifics soon.

Not sure what that means exactly. All I'm saying is it's one thing to scream -- drain the swamp and act like govt employees are living high off the hog. But reality is at my agency a lot of our various admin roles -- people who do expense reports; HR; set up printers/new computers etc. -- are filled by people who are young vets. Before this their experience consisted of shooting people or refueling jeeps or whatever. Being able to get into the gov't gave them a chance to establish an office/white collar resume so that they wouldn't be 35, aging out of the military without any office type of resume experience - bc the private sector certainly isn't giving them those kinds of chances when they can just steal away admin people with experience from another fortune 500. I guess the gen younger than them doesn't get that?

So, apparently this includes the IC too -- just got word and higher ups are currently working on a waiver.

I guess PP is saying that the freeze covers the intelligence community, which one might have thought would have been part of the National security exemption.... but guess not.

I'd assume public healthy means VA hospitals who are treating patients or CDC investigating an outbreak. NIH research probably would not count.

Do you think it includes the FDA? Doesn't he want faster approval of generics?

I think it depends on where you work in the Agency. Inspectors in ORA might be exempt , reviewers in CDRH might not be.

Has he actually talked about generics?

What about lowere lecel political appointees (Schedule C)? i'm assuming they can still be hired? Otherwise, I'm puzzled how Trump thinks he will be able to do implement inside agencies?

Also, is their long term strategy to freeze, repeal hiring/firing protections, then fire or incent out, and then open hiring again and stack civil service with Trump-friendly people? They can do this in 4 years.

Anyone have a guess as to whether this includes internal transfers as well? Could a fed at agency X fill a vacancy at agency Y?

We were advised by our HR department before the inauguration that lateral transfers within an agency would be exempt from a freeze..... I wouldn't swear on it but it would make sense

I've wondered this too. The top 3 levels of our Department are missing- Secretary, Assistant Secretaries and the Directors...

Are you off today? Why are you on DCUM during the workday, Ms. Fed?
