All those people who reported to orientation at 830 this morning are having the last laugh. Probably the last hires to ever be covered under FERS.

So this means no one else will be hired to work in the White House after today?

Maybe they'll get to keep FERS, maybe not. They aren't vested yet and it's not clear whether Chaffetz is only gunning for new hires or people that aren't vested yet.

So a pay freeze as well? Where does that leave the 1% (or 2.88% in DC) that Obama granted -- which we haven't received yet? It's effective Jan 8, so it would be in Friday's paycheck. What about if you're at the SEC and got another merit increase to be paid out 2 weeks from Friday (so starting in THIS pay period which started Sunday) -- assume that one's gone?

So upset. I was going to get a promotion after waiting 4 years. My job was going to be advertised at a higher grade.

That sucks. Just hang tight and wait. You never know how it will play out. GL.

I may be wrong, but I would think merit increases are separate from the hiring and pay freeze. I thought the pay freeze was just for COLA. I hope I'm right!

Glad for those people that they got in. Whether FERS or not -- presumably they resigned other jobs so they would have been screwed if this had been signed before 8:30 am; he signed it at 11:55 -- they've already taken the oath . . . .

The Washington post article says it excludes "military, public safety and public health" so what exactly does that exclude? Does the FDA count as public health?

For the COLA/locality (2.88%) -- isn't that payroll already being processed? That pay period is over -- we submitted time last Wed/Thursday and usually paystubs are available by this Wed even though you don't get the cash until later in the week. I'm not sure this order changes that. No idea re merit pay -- wish they'd post the orders online so we could see the specifics but that'd be too much transparency.

PP 12:12 again. Yes I hope the 2.88% COLA can't be reneged. I keep refreshing pages to get more info. What exactly does "public health" and "public safety" encompass??

The freeze was coming, and your agency knew it. Your agency could have spend up the process. Your supervisor could have advocated for you.
