Every day it seems there is some new, crazy development in the Trump Show's treatment of Canada, and a few of my Canadians do talk about it regularly. Nobody has shown prejudice or anger to me personally, though the Canadians are angry and incredulous at what is happening.

We did start a political cartoon collage wall in the shared kitchen at work, where people have been printing satirical cartoons of Trump from news sources and adding them each morning to the collage. It now covers the entire wall.

My British colleagues are more direct in expressing their disgust at the US government, and they also tend to make disparaging comments about American people specifically, not just our politicians. However, in my many years overseas, the Brits everywhere I meet them have always been like this, so I don't think it is related to current events.

Bizarrely, I have some Chinese colleagues who LOVE LOVE LOVE Trump.

Chinese striver culture idolizes greed and glitz and fakery. This is the country that invented selling iPhone shells without iPhone guts, not as a fraud, but as a way to appear rich to your peers.

So now we're justifying xenophobia against the Chinese as well as Americans? Great. Just great.

The good Chinese are our friends in Taiwan.

The CCP in Beijing is not our “friendly trading partner.” Unfortunately, mainland China is our hostile, expansionist enemy who is actively doing harm to the USA every day; that is simply a fact.

Did you not complete your cyber security training? Are you unaware of China’s reverse-Opium War against the USA, which has actively and intentionally flooded our streets with Chinese fentanyl in order to weaken our society?

You need to wake up to the facts, PP.

But what's crazy to me is this very xenophobic anger towards random American people, just spewing utterly hateful stuff. I'm not sure what the end goal is here, maybe it's just a form of venting and they dont mean it but frankly it comes off deranged. I dont think the average American feels the same kind of deep seated animosity towards Canadians (or any particular country, for that matter). Has anyone seen this?

It’s terrifying! I wouldn’t travel to Canada right now. It is not safe.

You are much safer in Canada than the US. Justifiably angry Canadians preparing for an uncertain future are not interested in attacking individuals with violence. They are supporting their country’s economy. They are putting aside differences to collaborate on what is most important. They express sympathy for their many friends and family across the border. If you go up and spout off about taking over Canada they will be rude, which takes quite a lot for most Canadians outside of Quebec which can feel rude to Americans anyway. They might ask you to leave a service establishment. And if you make threats they’ll report you. That’s it. You’re not getting murdered or assaulted for existing as a US Citizen in Canada.

Yes! I actually live abroad (Europe) and it's quite common for me to hear from people how much they love America when I say where I'm from. Of course I also get a good bit of ranting about Trump, people who sometimes dont like America, whatever. I think a bit of polarization is to be expected, but for sure you get plenty of really positive remarks when you say youre American. And I spent a good amount of time in various Eastern Asian countries- it's extremely common there to hear rhapsodizing praise about Americans.

But I mean, some haters are to be expected. It just seems like the Canadians are on another level and are just frothing at the mouth. I find it strange.

Remember “we” started this pissing match.

Yes, of course, when people meet individual americans in real life, they like them as individuals. But that's different than hating them as a monolith country.

THis is not new. And what happened yesterday in the news is HORRIFYING. You should not be surprised that Canadians hate americans with a firy passionate rage.

You'll need to be a lot more specific, sadly.

Trump announced in a single statement that (i) he was doubling canadian tariffs on steel to 50%, and (ii) would annex canada.

WIthin hours, certain tariffs that had been instituted by canada were dropped. So trump dropped the 50% down to the originally planned 25%.

Trump was extremely serious about the 50% tariff (hence the immediate backing down by Canada), and the annex threat was in the same very short statement. WHich makes it seem likely that he is also very serious about annexing canada if he doesn't continue to get what he wants. We are no longer in joke territories. Large canadian businesses are taking asset protection strategies against US expropriation. I know because i am seeing email traffic at work about this. People think this is not a joke and are changing business practices to protect against annexation.

Then dont be upset I guess when people call Covid "China Virus" or say other incendiary things, since xenophobia is now acceptable once they do something against Canada.

Americans and Trump are very popular in various Asian countries. When I was in Japan there were a number of places that would be absolutely decked out in American flags and very "middle America" style decorations. Stuff that would be considered OTT in the US

This does NOT mean they love Trump. They just enjoy their various theme restaurants for good-natured, apolitical fun--kind of like we have Epcot. Japan is full of "theme" bars and restaurants for different historic periods in different countries.

I think we all have some likes/dislikes. I don't care for British people generally, but I am not going on Tiktok to trash them and I am polite to them when I encounter them. People online try to be divisive and negative as a sport.

Yes - that is the point of social media.

Social media is incredibly toxic.

In 2020, I used the initial term we all used: Wuhan novel coronavirus-19.

Then we were banned from adding the word “Wuhan” - even though it is indisputable the virus originated in the Wuhan region.

If you ascribed xenophobia to the factual designation “Wuhan,” that sounds like a “you” problem, not a problem with the facts.

It is safe to visit Canada.

Our habitual muttering about the weather has switched course to ranting about Trump is all.

I’m Canadian and fully onboard the buy Canada movement. Everything I see is not hating on Americans, but hating on Cheeto. There are many Americans who are also supporting the movement and understand the anger. Actually people from around the world are also getting on board. He is threatening the sovereignty of multiple allies. If you don’t think that anger is justified welp, you sound just like him, making it about you and not the real issue.

I am a Canadian who lives in Canada. We are shocked about the US's threats to annex Canada. We take those threats seriously. To the person who said we are "frothing at the mouths," how would you react if China publicly expressed its intention to annex the US and (hypothetically) had the capacity to do so? You would be genuinely frightened.

That being said, we do not hate Americans. Americans are welcome here. We may be eager to discuss the current situation, but we absolutely do not want any harm to come to American individuals. For comparison, most of us believe the Iranian regime is horrible. However, we do not have any contempt for individual Iranians who live here or visit here.

Trump is planning a military invasion to take over Canada.
