Canadians hating Americans?

Anonymous
They don't "hate" Americans--Canadians are among the nicest of people I've met. They hate the administration that thinks it's a good idea to talk about taking over Canada as its 51st state and doesn't respect country boundaries or agreements on trade and puts tariffs overnight and then removes them overnight with no thoughts to the businesses (American or Canadian) that suffer along the way.

I know for a fact that Canadian companies with fixed assets in the United States are actively seeking protections to prevent EXPROPRIATION of their assets. I think there is a non-zero chance that the US also attempts to seize natural resource assets within Canada, as in start a physical land war. This is absolute insanity.

Canadians have a very reasonable right to despise every American right now. This isn't like "oh we feel bad because 2% of federal workers are losing their jobs". This is the first and most outward step in an entire destabilization in the Post WWII global order. And US citizens are just shrugging and think it's trump-being-trump on twitter.

I just dont agree with that. I can take issue with Putin's actions and think he's the scum of the earth... that doesnt prevent me from going to the amazing Russian restaurant in my city, chatting with the sweet Russian owner, and consuming tons of vareniki. It's deranged to hate the citizens of a country because of the actions of the government and that includes hating Americans, Russians, Chinese, whatever other place...

+1 This. We've been safe from WWIII type threats for many decades now, but with the USA attacking our allies and embracing Putin who would like nothing better than to destabilize Europe and the USA, it's very scary now. I feel for the Canadians who are subject to the nasty language from Trump and his idiotic tariffs.

Just as it is silly to think people ranting on Tik Tok (!) are representative of all the people in a particular country.

People! Trump is serious about invading Canada.

Why do people not think he’s serious?? This is going to happen and tens of thousands will die.

But what's crazy to me is this very xenophobic anger towards random American people, just spewing utterly hateful stuff. I'm not sure what the end goal is here, maybe it's just a form of venting and they dont mean it but frankly it comes off deranged. I dont think the average American feels the same kind of deep seated animosity towards Canadians (or any particular country, for that matter). Has anyone seen this?

Bro, plenty of average/below-average americans feel that way about other americans. Maybe they haven't included Canadians in their hatefest yet, but that's probably only because they don't pay attention to international news. As soon as they get wind of Canadians being anti-MAGA, they'll hate them too.

He intends to invade and make Canada our 51st

Exactly! Now is not the time to feel sorry for ourselves as Americans and call Canadians who are scared for a very good reason "deranged." It's a time to call your reps, protest, speak out against the Trump regime doing what was unthinkable just a few short months ago.

Yes! I actually live abroad (Europe) and it's quite common for me to hear from people how much they love America when I say where I'm from. Of course I also get a good bit of ranting about Trump, people who sometimes dont like America, whatever. I think a bit of polarization is to be expected, but for sure you get plenty of really positive remarks when you say youre American. And I spent a good amount of time in various Eastern Asian countries- it's extremely common there to hear rhapsodizing praise about Americans.

But I mean, some haters are to be expected. It just seems like the Canadians are on another level and are just frothing at the mouth. I find it strange.

If you “find it strange” then you really haven’t been paying attention these last few months. Are you thinking that Canadians should welcome Trump’s very serious, repeated threats to make Canada “a 51st state” and his disrespectful comments about Canada’s “governor “? Or did you somehow miss all of that?

I live in DC area. I am visiting in Toronto right now. What I see and hear is anti-Trump sentiment, no anti-American sentiment. For the most part, feels like I am still home in DC.

Trump already called Canada the “51 state,” which means he is going to invade Canada with our military!

Goodness. This is a stupid analogy. Is that Russian restaurant located in the USA operates by Americans who happen to be of Russian ancestry. Totally not the same thing. Hint. The restaurant is an American owned restaurant, employing Americans and paying American taxes. The food just happens to be Russian inspired food.

As a mother of a 16 year old boy, I am very scared that this lunatic is going to institute a draft to fight with one of our biggest allies.

I also live in Europe and can't agree. While during the first term most Eruopeans had compassion for the Trump underlings the situation has changed now, as Trump threatens to conquer Greenland, collaborates with kleptocrat Putin, has left WHO und plans to leave NATO and so on. And while during the first term of presidency there were huge protests and demonstrations we don't hear anything from the american civil society, everybody seems just to agree. So at the moment you don't get a laot of positive feedback about the USA (except from Right-wing extremists). But that does not mean, that Europeans "hate" Americans. They don't unterstand them.
